UFC Quick Quote: 'Big Nog' excited to make Octagon debut

"I know there are a lot differences [in UFC rules] and I'll have to adapt my game. But I always looked for the submissions, and I believe that my adaptation will be good. Maybe because of the fact the fight is in the Octagon my opponent will be able to avoid my takedowns. But I can handle it, and we will see how things are going to work. About the rules, here in UFC elbows are allowed, but when the opponent uses it, he opens more spaces and this will make things easier for me. My expectations about making my first fight in the Octagon are big. I'm anxious to show the same submission game I showed in Japan. I want to prove that I'll be successful in the UFC and my first step will be my debut fight. Now I have to train and wait for the great day."
-- Former PRIDE FC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira talks about his eagerness to make his UFC debut, as well as how the rule changes might affect his fight game, with Sherdog.com. No opponent or date has been announced for the Brazilian's first appearance inside the Octagon.

I believe nog should be able to present himself as an even better in the ufc due to him not having to worry about getting stomped or kneed to the head on take down attempts. he is a great fighter and i bet that him and anderson silva will form a brazilian camp together now that hes in america if they havent already which will improve andersons ground game and help improve nogs striking. Nog is hands down a great addition to the ufc

Great addition but I hope they make him work his way up a little and not bring him the heat quick.

I agree, Nog vs. Vera would be an interesting matchup. It would definitely show two of the top guys, not champions mind you, from both leagues going head to head. I also think it would dispel the myth that Vera should be champ and would give some positive exposure to Nog from whatever American MMA fans that havent seen him yet.
Hopefully, they dont give him a can.

i hope he doesn’t fight barnett, i want to see him against a ufc fighter, vera would be tight, i wish sylvia didn’t have the back injury, what about jake obrien, that might be a decent chance for him to get a submission…

No not vera, I would like to see Nog fight someone with a good ground game, it’s too bad Gonzaga is tied up with this title shot, that would be good and maybe we’ll see that in the future. Werdum?

Vera vs big nog would be a good fight. Vera’s a good fighter but part of me would like to see him lose.

I see Vera vs. Nog as one of those fights where I’m stuck in the middle and don’t want to root for either because I’m a fan of both.

I understand the middle of the road thing, and I respect Vera as a fighter but I can’t stand a guy who holds out for money the way he did. Everyone has to think about their future and family but that guy should of been more patient with the money. He is a good fighter but he hasn’t proved anything. I hope Nog puts him in his place. Big Nog will put it down for the guys that earn their keep

I like the way nog fight’s…it’s a classy style that will definately change the way the HW’s fight in the UFC. Nog will definately throw a few submissions in there…It’s going to be fun to see him in the Octo….i never heard any interviews by him though, is Nog a nice fellow or ???

Prediction: If they throw Nog in the ring with Vera, or any other legitimate ufc heavyweight fighter with octagon experience, he’ll lose.
I like him, and think he’s a DECENT heavyweight, but I don’t see him blazing through the division. He’ll be a contender, but never a champion.
After watching the CC/Gonzaga fight on Saturday, I can forsee a serious changing of the guard. There are a number of strong, young fighters who just need the opportunity.

Adjusting to the ocatagon is a challenge but I feel Nog will be the exception. This guy is a beast. Many can argue that CC was supposed to blaze through HW division but you can tell he was uneasy. I mentioned on another blog that CC might have lost his edge ever since serving a political role back in home country. Rumor is he will go back to special police after term ends in November. CC will be back with a vengence. I hate to say it but i think he relied on that edge. Nog is something different that I’m sure many will agree with. I have a good feeling Big Nog will do well in the UFC. He is still very young and will represent well. Becoming champ will be the toughest challenge as long as Randy is the top of the food chain.

People talk about Nog’s submissions as his strengths, and Nog mentioned that takedown defenses would be easier in the Octagon. This brings up a question — how good is Nog’s stand-up game?
by david on Apr 25, 2007 7:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It don’t matter on the stand up game..Big nog can take people down and end it right there..He can withstand alot of punishment too…I don’t know about the ref’s in the UFC though. I don’t think they’ll let big nog take as much damage on the ground, like thet let him get in Pride…From the tapes i’ve seen anyways…..
..See ya..

Nog’s standup is pretty decent. I know this isnt saying a whole hell of a lot, but when Nog fought Herring, the second time, he outstruck him. Plus, he has a legendary chin. Thats how he beat Cro Cop. He weathered the storm and siezed the oppurtunity for the sub.

what about jake obrien, that might be a decent chance for him to get a submission
Yeah, based on Jakes last performance, Nog would submit O’Brian in the 1st round. Unless, Jakes been training super-duper hard & in that case Nog would submit him in the 2nd rd.

Serious, I have never seen an un-rockable guy as nog, he is right up there with Penn and Liddell, those guys can’t be rocked!! Dosnt matter where you hit them, chin or not. You see that kick Nog took by CC at the end of round 1 I think? Wasnt the BEST most powerful kick but still!! I’m not so sure about cage making harder take downs. Isnt it easier to press them up against the cage and immobolize them to set up a take down? Seems that way anyway. Nog will do just fine. I doubt he will pull a CC and freeze up and die, he is very consistant. CC has a history of some fluke losses. Nog is very consistant, if somebody beats him it is becuase they were better, not because some fluke thing, and I dont think there are many here that are better, at least not Vera.

Nah man, NOG is the man, he will take out Vera. Vera has NEVER been tested, this is a HUGE jump in level of competition for him. Vera will be a force to be reckond with, but with a little more expiriance and improvment I think. He is not there…YET, in my opinion. Blazing through and taking the belt, I dunno, but he will be a contendar for sure, and I bet make a title shot. Randy is the man though, I hope he keeps the title forever haha.

and think he’s a DECENT heavyweight
Yeah, decent….
Big will do just fine here. The Octagon is larger, making it easier for opponents to run away, as we have seen lately. But I confident a smart fighter like Big Nog will adjust. His mind is more solid than his chin, if you can believe it.
