UFC 73: Ortiz calls Evans his "Nappy Headed Ho"

UFC light heavyweight fighter Tito Ortiz pulled a page out of the genius Don Imus playbook earlier this morning on a message on the Underground forum, calling his opponent at UFC 73, Rashad Evans, a "Nappy Headed Ho."
"The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" posts under the screen name, FUTA1.
Here's the snip from Ortiz:
"Rashad Evans!!! He will be my Nappy Headed Ho. On 7-7-07...Let The Punishment Begin!!! Tito Ortiz"
For some quick background, Imus was fired on April 12 by CBS Radio after he called the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" during his live syndicated program, igniting a public firestorm for his racial remarks.
Now, I'm no expert on the term "nappy," but I have a rather good idea of what someone with "nappy" hair looks like.
And, from what I gather, with a shaved head and tight fade, Rashad Evans doesn't fit that description whatsoever.
So, I headed over to UrbanDictionary.com for further clarification.
Here's what I found:
1. Nappy — One of African descent who has tightly coiled, unkept hair; one with locks of hair that is tightly curled that is unwashed and uncombed.
Seems like Ortiz is making quite a reach here, trying to capitalize on a sensationalized media headline to create some sparks for his upcoming bout on July 7.
Too bad he comes offs sounding like an absolute idiot.

Here we go again, the neverending wisdom of tito never ceases to amaze me… (Sarcasim) Could tito just shut up or put up on this fight, his talk just never seems to throw off anyone else except for Shamrock.

Not too surprising from Tito. Quite honestly tactics like this only make this sport look like a total joke. Tito is just trying to create some buzz around him to sell more tickets which does work for whatever reason. But I think we need to remind him this isn’t the damn WWF.

Is there any proof that was actually Tito? I know Tito likes to talk, but I really doubt that he would say that. I’ve been a Tito fan for 7 years, and it just doesn’t seem like he’d pull that card.

I use to love tito, he was my favortie. But hearing how he stayed out of the UFC because of money, then just sounding like a loser on radio shows, and pulling out of the dana white boxing match because of money again, i just cant like him. And to say this, and start something so stupid again its disrespectful in the fighting world and its just annoying. Evans is a class act, he made sure that salmon was ok and hope he would get better after the great kick to the head. I really hope evans does the same kick to tito and says f u after the match. Really uncalled for tito

As a Rutgers graduate, I think I am qualified enough to say that Rashad Evans is not a “nappy-headed ho”.
Evans is definitely the one with the momentum going his way. Knocking out Tito will solidify his place among the top light heavyweights.

I know, he means that he’s gonna lose his job for being a tool. Ya, that must be it, and he’s saying Evans is gonna be the comment that finally gets him fired.
So in that sense Rashad is his “Nappy headed ho”.

More dumbass comments from a hasbeen fighter that could only beat ken shamrock. Tito could never beat ne grade A competition in the UFC like couture, Frank Shamrock, or lidell, everytime getting dominated. So he goes down to the B ranks and fights TUF fighters like griffin and evans. What a joke, keep it up tito, fight all the up and coming inexperienced guys when u still got a shot at winning.

I grew alot of respect for him after TUF3 but so of his antics r kinda pushing me away..as for the fight im hoping evans takes it..would be nice to see a KO or TKO he would deserve it..was there really any need to bash evans especially in that way…hes going to get himself into alot of trouble again

who do you suggest he fights dude?? forrest and rah are up and comers yes, but rah is a top five ufc lhw right now and forrest was when tito beat him, if anything he should be getting credit for being able to beat these guys, and don’t forget he beat wandy silva, guy mezger, vitor belfort, evan tanner, patrick cote, a lot of good fighters, not just ken shamrock, who is no pussy himself, especially the first time they fought, if you bash a guy because he loses to who is now the hw champ and the lhw champ then i guess you just expect perfection from every fighter, and in this game you ain’t gonna get that bro, if you think rahshad is a b level fighter and tito should be fighting someone better you tell me who then, fighting an udefeated fighter like rahshad at this point in his career is def nothing to bash the guy about, he should be praised, get a clue…

Wanderlei is still one of the greatest fighters to walk the planet… Tito beat him.
Tito is largely about money now… but the thing I dont understand is, how could he be so badly needing money when he made almost 3million in the bout versus Liddell last new years?

I agree that Tito will win this fight. many believe Rashad will win, but I don’t see him ready. With the pressure of winning, Tito will step up to the occasion. Rashad can afford to lose without huge redicule. He’s undefeated and it will be explained by Tito being the more experienced fighter.

I really think that Rashad will not only win this fight… but dominate. Me… I am nor a Tito fan… or a Tito hater. Why do I think Rashad will beat him you ask? A few reasons
1) Rashad is exactly what everyone says he is… an up and comer. By beating Tito… he will go from being an up and comer… to one of the dominate lh’s.
2) Sure… some say Tito’s talking and personality is only to put people in the seats… BUT… I happen to believe that he is really out of his element right now. I honestly think him dating Jenna is Fuc*in up his head.
3) All Tito’s talking is only fueling Rashad…
As for a specific prediction on how the fight will end, Im going to say Split Decision for Rashad. Let Me know if you guys agree or disagree with what I said

50 50 on this one. One reason i’m dieing to see it. Not a favorite whatsoever in any direction. Rashad is awsome. This is good, he will finally be tested. Tito at this point it the gateway to the LHW title. If Rashad beats tito, he has no else but Chuck himself left.
Sounds pretty skecthy though, that even Tito would say that.
But ya know what, it’s probably just to rile everybody up after this recent blown out of proportion incident. You konw Tito, like a school bully messin with teh nerd, even more when the nerd says to stop. Just to be funny. I think its funny, disrespectful, but funny.

i agree with this for sure, if rah wins, he’s a definate contender for liddell, as for the jenna thing, i don’t know if you can say that, the dude has always acted with cockiness and has always wanted more money, but those aren’t bad qualities in a fighter, especially a pro fighter, his cockiness leads to fans, good or bad, but he’s putting asses in the seats and eyes on the tv, so he should be paid what he’s worth, if jenna had anything to do with this i don’t know, but i don’t think its a bad thing, he’s just trying to get paid like the rest of us…

if tito wins it’ll be a unanimous decision
if rahshad wins it’ll be (T)KO
i just think tito will outwork rahshad, i’ve said that all along, he knows how to impress the judges, but like liddell said tito don’t like to get hit and rah hits hard and kicks hard so maybe he’ll catch tito, but i don’t see rahshad outworking tito in 2 of the three rounds, which is what it would take to win

Rah can take these comments with a grain of salt. Tito isn’t saying these things to effect Rah, he’s saying these things to effect himself. Tito is one of those guys that thinks that he has to hate his opponent. I don’t know if I’ve ever (correct me if I’m wrong) heard Tito just say,“_____’s a great fighter and i have a lot of respect for him and it’s going to be a great fight” ala Randy or Rich Franklin. Tito needs to create animosity in order to perform his best. Immature, yes, professional, no, but it has worked for him to some extent. I’d love to see him show his opponent some respect before he loses a fight instead of after he gets his ass handed to him.

Couture is more than a great wrestler. He is the smartest fighter in MMA. He handled Tito with his intelligence. Tito is a great wrestler. Rashad is a great wrestler but as intelligent as Randy to find the holes in Tito’s game. He is very unorthodox, flashy, and somewhat stupid at times. Very strong, powerful striker, utilizes legs, but will be exposed when dealing with someone more experienced. Tito still plays head games, but he has matured tremendously. Tito is a seasoned vet and we will see a better Tito this time around.

Dude, Couture probably is the smartest man in MMA, and can exploit a weakness well, but he is a beast as well, he dosnt just win cause he can exploit the weaknesses in they’re game, his game is better than they’res, Randy is incredibly talented, and strong. There is nothing Tito could have ever done, besides sometihng lucky, to beat Couture. He will never be at that level. Couture’s game is one of the best out there, that’s why he is champ.

yeah, my bad, i was just trying to point out that they’re both using the psych the other guy out technique, i honestly didn’t know who was the one that initiated that whole thing, i’m sure it was tito, thats his style, but both these guys are showmen and i can’t see how these guys could hate each other, maybe theres some shit i don’t know about behind the scenes, but i’m sure this is just hype for the fight and i love it, but yeah you’re right i got mixed up on the pushing incident
i like what the guy said about rah being a good wrestler and tito having trouble with couture who is a good wrestler too, but rah is no where near the level of wrestler randy couture is and i think rah should try and stand with tito, it’d be his best bet to try and hit tito hard and knock him out
also to the predictor, i don’t know how you can say nobody cared about this fight, this is one me and my friends have been talking about for a long time, it means a lot in the 205 division and pre fight hype or not this one was gonna be highly anticipated, even if it was jardine instead of rah, but especially now that its rah

Rashad gets better with every fight. When he fought Salmon though, he had a lot of opportunities to take his back which he didn’t and also and there were a few easy guillotines he chose not to take. When he fights Tito he better not pass up any chance he gets to end the fight or he is going to regret it. When he creates an opportunity his team should tell him to capitalise on it and not just let it pass because he he has other things in mind.
I think Rashad can definately beat Tito and he has explosive takedowns that will see him put Tito on his ass quite a few times throughout the fight. Either way I think this will definately be one Tito’s hardest fights. He really better not underestimate Rashad

Tito is doing a great job at hyping up this fight. If anyone thinks he is a has been or an idiot than I think there’s some personal bias in that opinion.
Can anyone blame Tito for having money play a part in his career? Who doesn’t.
As far as being a has been, who, besides Chuck and Randy (the current champs) has beaten him in recent years? The guy has victories of Hughes, Tanner, Griffen, Wanderlei, Belfort, Vladimir, etc.etc.
But you who think Rashad will KO Tito are right because he kicked 5’10" Salmon in the head after loosing the first round… and he beat Bonner by decision. Rashad will go right through the guy who has the most 205 title defenses in UFC history. Way to work it through – great analysis.

I’ve always liked Tito. The fact that he talks a lot can sometimes make for good entertainment but he went to far this time. I’m sure he’s lost a lot of fans a respect from mma guys like myself. I agree you cant prove it was ortiz that said that. And even if it was who cares. Call it hype call it whatever ya want if tito is involved theres gonna be controversy. And i think its great i like the added drama when fighters talk smack about eachother. I think there are times when they get a little overboard with it but thats in any sport. But it adds more build up to the actual fight and i dont see how it hurts anyone unless your gonna tell me Evans got his fuzzy wuzzies hurt over anything ortiz has said. I really doubt it. I want tito to win but i think Rashad has a good chance of Knocking ortiz out. But i hope Ortiz wins.

it doesn’t matter what tito does here, even if he knocks out rah, the haters are still gonna hate, everyone who is saying rah is gonna kill tito now will then be saying, oh rahshad’s not that good, tito can’t beat chuck liddell or randy couture, but hey, nobody can beat those guys, thats why they are the champs, there’s only one belt in each division, everybody can’t be champion…
Well said, totally agree
Me too. I’m not a huge Tito fan ,but he did last 3 rounds with Chuck and I’m not so sure Rahshad could.

Yea it might be about the money and everything for tito but look at everything his body goes through all of the training and when he gets in that octagon all the beating his body takes, one little mistake and Tito could never fight again. id be the same way! from just watching all of his fights, you can tell he loves what he does. I hope Tito does the ground and pound on Rashad and I hope he punishes him! I Love you Tito!

I didn’t hear it and don’t really believe it. If he did …oh well, that whole situation got way out of hand. People need to quit making mountains out of mole hills. But back to Tito himself, to love him is to love the shit he talks, the shit he starts, and the controversy that surrounds him (always)! I love him and will be at UFC 73 and will hopefully get to see Tito’s famous ground and pound!!! GO TITO!

GONNA BE ROTFLMFAO when tito kicks the shit out of the nappy headed hoe in under 2 minutes in the first. TKO easy win first round goes to Tito and I know that for a 100% fact. Ill bet anyone any amount of money on it that Tito destroys Evans.

Hate to say it but Titos mma days may be done, he not exciting like he used to be at all he bareley eeks out wins, theres to many good up and commers that can whip his ass, hes no longer a threat in his division, I could name at least 10 fighters who would drop him besides Chuck. The only way he can stay in the game is to have a dominant performance over Rashad and win his next 3 fights in a row, but I dont see that happening.

yea! Lets pull the race card!I Think I heard Tito say he was going to K.K.K.O. Rashad. Yea that’s what I heard him say,I also heard him saying that he really was scared to fight Dana White because, belive it or not. Dana is a real bad ass!He also thought Forrest beat him on points cause we all know how you score points by hitting you opponet in the elbow with your face.Too much CRAP being talked ,thats the problem. and most of the people talking crap dont know crap. The biggest crock of CRAP is that Tito hasn’t really fought anybody good.I think you better check the list again people.DONT HATE CELIBRATE 07-07-07 GO TITO!

Let Me know if you guys agree or disagree with what I said
Like him or hate him, Tito is going to win.

Tito is an Idiot he knows rashad will beat him and Is being a complete moron being racist and saying S*IT that he wont back up
trying to get his opponent pissed because he thinks it will give him an advantage, he is just making himself look like a pussy and after the fight he is going to cry and say how could a fighter evans is. Rashad will KO tito in the 2nd round and nobody will see him as a contender again.

Tito is a showman and a great fighter. Enjoy the fight-show, kids, and I hope Tito kicks ass for many years to come.

I’ve always had great respect for Ortiz. Tito has been an asset to MMA, but this comment was down right stupid. Trash talking is one thing, but this is totally over the line, a line Tito hasn’t crossed in the past. He has to realize that his comments go beyond Rashad and into possibly offending some of his fan base… the very fan base that buys his products and supports his fights Very, very dumb.
I think Rashad is too smart an individual to allow that comment to derail him in anyway.
I think Gord makes a good point about dating Jenna going to his head. Dude is on top of the world right now and he’s totally feeling himself.
This will be Rashad’s first elite level challenge and I hope he can pull out a victory but something tells me Tito will be a bit too much for him. I hope i’m wrong.
by FT on Jul 5, 2007 3:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This will be Rashad’s most difficult challenge, by far. I could do without Tito’s racist comments but trashtalk or not, he is still a very capable and dangerous opponent. I’ve been a Rashad fan since everyone underestimated him in TUF. I hope he is ready for this fight.

YEAH, TITO CAN BE A DICK AT TIMES BUT HE’S A GREAT FIGHTER AND HAS DONE MUCH FOR THE SPORT.I WOULD REALLY LIKE HIM MORE IF HE WAS MORE RESPECTFUL. YOU DONT HAVE TO BE THAT WAY TO SELL TICKETS. JUST LOOK AT RANDY, HES SUCH A NICE GUY AND A KILLER. ON THE OTHER HAND, LOOK AT MUHAMMAD ALI, HE WAS THE KING OF TALKING SMACK. BUT THIS IS A FIGHT, AND WHEN YOU’RE ADRENALINE STARTS PUMPING, SOMETHING IS BOUND TO COME OUT YOUR MOUTH THAT’S NOT NICE.
I STILL BELIEVE TITO WILL TAKE THIS FIGHT, HE BETTER AFTER ALL THAT TALK. RASHAD IS GETTING BETTER AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO BUT HE WILL LOSE TONIGHT. JUST HOPE ITS A GOOD FIGHT.
