Activists call to ban MMA in UK after UFC 70

There's a rather amusing article (or is it sad?) in the London-based tabloid the London Star about the UFC 70: "Nations Collide" event, which took place this past weekend at the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N.) Arena in Manchester, England.

Some of the adjectives used to describe the show include, "bloody," "violent," "vicious" and "gruesome."

In addition, anti-violence campaigner Steven Adams gets some ink.

Here's his take on the action:

"This should be banned immediately. It's not sport – it's the equivalent of a human dog fight and it glorifies violence to a horrifying extent."

It's too bad that so many people -- as well as countless press outlets -- still just don't get it.

I just want to pass along the clip and not pontificate too much on the uneducated who don't know zilch about the sport -- I could go on for days.

People like this are just funny. They talk about thing they know nothing about. And last time I check dog fights and cock fights were to the death. Not to mention no referee or gloves or mouth pieces. Even though that would be kinda funny..

Not only CC getting knocked out but the bisping fight was a massacre. bloody ground and pound, Elvis’s face was drenched in blood. can you imagine some english poof’s drinking their tea and eating their crumpets, watching Sinosic get pounded?

“The contestants kicked, punched and scratched each other to bits . . . .” Scratched? Bitch-slapped maybe.

It never ceases to amaze me quickly these sanctimonious morons jump up and down to ban what others watch on TV. Hey, I think American Idol is bad for the viewing public as it quickly drains away IQ points. So instead of loudly campaigning to pull the show off the air, I just don’t watch (and make fun of people I know that do watch). Mr. Adams is free to not pony up his 15 pounds to watch.

sinocic wasnt even that messd up compared to other fights…this was a less bloody card than usual imo…the only part that was “brutal” was the cro cop fight, and being cro cop has done that many times himself, its not a big deal…besides looking at blood and knock outs…these guys should look at teh terry etim fight as a source for the sport, the guy was losing big, then came back and provailed..thats what the sport is about, its not about hurting eachother as some might say or think…or even look at how sinocic was ok, and came back to almost turn the tables……look outside the box “activists”

Why complain? It’s not gonna be banned and this type of press will only make people want to see what they’re talking about that much more. Good bussiness. Thank the dummies.

All I got to say is isn’t rugby legal in England? and It’s just as violent as MMA

That wasnt journalism. Journalism is supposed to be objective. That was the most distorted story I have ever read. It used clever words like “appeared” to avoid actually lying about what goes on in the ring. And I love how we still look to MMAs biggest competitor, for approval of the sport.

by Mahde on Apr 23, 2007 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

Oh yeah, the biggest competitor is boxing…

Very good point Mahde! besides haven’t we been down this road before. Human dog fight, human cock fight…lol. MMA is here to stay. There will always be opposition to a gladiator’s sport. These guys are a joke

Argh. Been there, done that mate. Years later we’re still going strong.

Sorry, did we take attention away from football riots?

i can see how some first time viewers might have been scared by the gonzaga KO, it was pretty brutal, but thats as bad as it gets right there, and it should be noted that the herb dean did a nice job to recognize a fighter was in trouble and stop it before any real damage

by tha spida on Apr 23, 2007 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

You see more voilence at most pubs and Futball events…
But yet this is the country that embrases Boxing so much? Id put boxing brutality way over MMA. MMA stopages seem to be right on point… I’ve lost count of how many boxing matches Ive seen where boxers have been out cold on their feet, barely able to stand but still fighting continues…

by Luppers on Apr 23, 2007 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

Herb Dean did a great job on that one… It can be pretty brutal the first time you see it, but as I have bee a fan for a while you realize these guys don’t receive major injuries. Cro Cop was brutally ko’d, but within a few minutes he was up and walked out.

PPL like this make my blood boil……i wish i could UFC there assses!!! They know jack-shit about the sport and have everything to say….it is slightly amusing for us…but im sure there are other ppl who take it to heart or whatever and in turn cant be bothered with the sport….but i guess thats there bad.

by UFCbabEH on Apr 23, 2007 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Fuck rugby….look at boxing……on average 2 ppl die in the sport a year, MMA – 0. Dont get me wrong tho its true enough that rugby is a dangerous and violent too.

i think everybody is against mma

This story is a total joke, the paper in question that published this story, sponsored Cage Rage and the same night.
Unbelieveable!

by Localcup on Apr 23, 2007 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

I’ve read this article. It’s ridiculous, but the very same newspaper gave almost a full page to round up UFC 70 in the sports section. Thats the first time i’ve ever noticed an MMA write up or results in the british press. It’s a sport thats getting more and more fans, and in my opinion it is going to really blow up over here. Bring it on, thats what I say. After the success of saturday night, i just hope we can regularly get the big show over here.

As a doctor working in the ER, I have seen the results of just ‘simple’ fist fights and beatings. I don’t think you guys understand the damage a well placed punch to the right place can cause. I would bet that at the end of these fights, these guys end up getting CT scans to assess for intracranial hemorrhages; I don’t care how much people train – a well placed assault will do damage. You won’t die, you will just become dumber with every hit.

Personally, I could care less what happens to the guys who are fighting – win, lose, die; whatever. It’s the impact on the fools watching – the desensitization to violence makes people more prone to doing the same to someone else…i’m sure i’ll get flak for this comment since everyone here is a UFC cheerleader, but i’m sure someday someone reading this will get the sh*t pounded out of him by someone watching too much of this garbage.

It just sucks there first time seeing it was one of the most brutal KO’s in the history of the sport.

by The Anomaly on Apr 23, 2007 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

They did ban fox hunting guys or atleast until everyone flooded the streets looking for the poor little fella.
Sportsmanship…. I hunt and that is not hunting that is really torture.

I hope there is violence in the sport… its fighting, both people agree to it. Its just controlled aggression.

I am sure when boxers square off they really just wanna split the money but unfortunatly someone usually gets punched every now and then, what do they expect a big tickle fight.

by Robin on Apr 23, 2007 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

BAN MMA!!!! Keep boxing and its brain-injury-inducing 14 oz gloves…. KICKS ARE DANGEROUS!!! But, let the boxers fight 12 rounds… Hypocrites I say.

I tell you what man,I live in England in London but I am actualy from the north not to far from where Bisping is from and I hate these fukers who talk this shit with a passion.
Its not just MMA they want banned, they want everything banned, every kind of combat sport, even motocross and stuff like that, they can all fukin die.
They want us all to live like cattle and not to be allowed to do nothing, well fuck them. Real people see more violence than that on a weekly basis outside kebab shops and stuff.
The fighters in the UFC are not forced to fight, they can stop at any time all they have to do is tell the ref and the fight is finished, they enjoy fighting it is their freedom, their right.
We werent born with fists and knuckles to sit and taste tea and play golf.
This has pissed me off today reading this and I think I might go and find one of these anti MMA people and give him a free lesson in the difference between the sport of MMA and real true evil brutal horrible nasty violence with no ref and no rules.

by mcanena on Apr 24, 2007 7:56 AM EDT reply actions

Boxing is a long term injury sport. Imagine mma fighters given a 10 count to regain and keep going. Think some of them look messed up now at the end of the fight. Then the 8-10 ounce gloves ‘softly’ bashing your brain and guts in. Simular to holding a phone book to someone and beating it. It might not ‘look’ as brutal at first, but it is.

by Tommy on Apr 24, 2007 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

Tommy even though that is fact what you are saying they still woudnt listen even if einstien proved it to their dumb faces.
They just dont want people to have any kind of fun.
They wouldnt take a bit of notice to anyone trying to educate them on this stuff, they want everything banned,Im not even joking they try to get skateboarding banned and stuff like that so MMA is like unbearable to them. What I dont get though is why dont they just fuck off and watch there golf drink their tea and they dont have to watch MMA if they are really that big a pussys that they actualy find it so unbearable.

by mcanena on Apr 24, 2007 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

All sports have degree’s of violence, UFC just accepts it not promotes it, like all other sports tend to do. You know your gonna see pain when you watch, if you dont like it go back to Cricket you Hack.

OK now that mayweather won, Boxing is retired and we can look back at it and be like “that kind of sucked, when is UFC on?”

by BLOodyMEss on May 6, 2007 3:35 AM EDT reply actions

there are on average 12 boxing related deaths per year, but in 12 years of mma there has been none , i wonder?? witch is safer??

by st.whoopass on Sep 6, 2007 7:44 PM EDT reply actions

They had better not ban MMA in the uk or anywhere its a discipline, bad thaings happen in every martial art from time to time, its not very often you get a boodbath like ortiz vs shamrock is it.

by John on Sep 6, 2007 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

It really should be banned, half of the fighters are on painkillers, steroids, etc. etc. etc. The # of MMA fighters who will die young will blow the WWE away in the years to come.

English poofs? At least when we play rugby we dont cover ourselves in armour like the so called tough guys of “american football”

England has produced some of the worlds greatest fighters (So has the USA) So dont call us all poofs, its just our dam govt who seems to love them so much!

by FoxyUK on Mar 31, 2008 7:42 PM EDT reply actions

boxers can take over 500 hits to the head. boxers punch extremely hard because that is there only weapon. MMA fights not end in KO often at all. quite a lot its either by submisson or TKO

This sport may have originated from a genuine interest in which combat sport style is superior but it has become something that is nothing more than 20% skill and strength and %80 a shameless short-sighted lust for violence by its organiser and consumers. The desensitisation to violence (brutal violence) that comes with an addiction to this sport will harm our society in the long term(particularly our children). And those who don’t think so are narrow minded fools without any vision but just a bunch of one line rhetorical arguments.

The difference between people who back entertainment of this kind and those that don’t isn’t necessarily simply a difference of likes and dislikes, its also where you choose to sit on the debate of what is good for society or not. What we want our children to be exposed to or not, what we want our wifes and girlfriends and mothers to be exposed to. Where we want society (you and I) to draw the line on what is humanity and inhumanity.

Violence in sport is not new but sub-human violence was well and truly perfected in MMA and its equals. And does the ‘humane’ act of getting up at the end of a fight and shaking the hands of your opponent really excuse pounding a guys face with a knee?

Every male has some deeply rooted physcological conditioning to violence but this is an out of control addiction and you are all addicts and you are all in denial.

by Mondy on Jul 24, 2008 4:03 AM EDT reply actions

Ban this garbage. These steroided up freaks, take massive amounts of pain killers and speed before they ever step into the Octagon. It’s 1 step short of the Roman Arenas. Keep the masses entertained by mindless violence while their government helps murder a million Iraqis.

by Reality on Jan 3, 2009 1:20 PM EST reply actions

If we ban MMA/UFC, all that will happen is underground fights and THEN people will be killed and hurt. Parents who complain about it being violent and there kids watching it, aren’t very good parents if they can’t learn how to use a remote. MMA forever!
