UFC Quick Quote: Imitation is sincerest form of flattery

"Their product [UFC] is nowhere near as good as ours ... but the telecasts are very entertaining with a lot of music and activity and little talking."
-- Long-time boxing promoter Bob Arum talks about changing up the pay-per-view boxing telecast this weekend to resemble those of the UFC as told to the Los Angeles Times.

They have to do something… boxing is boring to watch. I would never pay to watch a boxing match.

Does this mean that we’ll get promos for upcoming events in between every round of boxing?

Does he really think at this point that his product is better? He’s either got blinders on or is spinning like crazy.

Boxing has to have a lot of talking because the PPVs have to fill three hours with a fight that can only take up to 48 minutes (12 rounds at 3 minutes per plus 1 minute between rounds). In reality this is just another idiot boxing guy trying to trash MMA because he knows his gravy train is grinding to a halt.

I’ve bought several PPV boxing events, and plan on purchasing the de la hoya vs mayweather fight. I’m hoping Mayweather gets knocked out. But, i would agree that I never miss an MMA PPV event, it is leaps and bounds ahead of boxing entertainment wise. Boxing almost always seems to be all hype, no delivery.

I saw some boxing last night on Versus. Boring. Here’s a rule change that would help. No hugging. Excessive hugging gets a yellow card that docks 10% of the purse, like Pride did.

“I think he comes out to Tupac “Ambitions as a Ridah.”
I believe that was Mike Swick’s music last time out. I don’t remember GSP’s.

I could have sworn he’s come out to Tupac before, am I thinking of someone else or was that before?

Whats that gonna change for boxing? Gonna look like steak and taste like bologna.

Swick came out to Tupac, not quite sure what that was for GSP.

“There Product is nowhere near as good as ours” yet they want to model it the same because they think (UFC) is more entertaining. I’m gonna use Tommy’s comparison “Bologna sucks but we would like our steak to taste like it” WTF

I used to watch PPV boxing way back in the ‘80s, until the Billy Collins incident, at which time I swore I’d never pay to watch another boxing event again…and I haven’t. Professional boxing is as corrupt as Caligula, and compared to MMA, about as exciting as watching paint dry. Good luck with their re-tooling, I don’t expect it will make much difference.
by Kravmagist on Apr 13, 2007 2:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Changing the packaging can’t hurt, but it won’t make a big difference. MMA is just more exciting than boxing is. Even our refs are exponentially cooler than any of theirs.

They should find every PRIDE show available. You guys have to admit…PRIDE shows were sick!! Pride 33 – 9 fights in 2.5 hours. UFC – 5 fights in 3 hours. I hope the Ferritta’s don’t change that about PRIDE…

Oddly, I can’t remember much trash-talking by MMA organizations or fighters about boxing. I think Dana’s fired off a few “boxing’s dying” type of comments, but even guys like Arum admit that boxing needs some new life. But you don’t ever hear guys like Liddell going out of his way to declare that Floyd Maywhether “ain’t s**t” at press conferences. Most MMA fighters appear either respectful or oblivious to boxing. I don’t think one can interpret boxing’s collective vitriol towards MMA as anything other than insecurity.

Lot’s of MMa guys have backgrounds in boxing so I think there is respect from the mma guys towards it.

The only thing boxing PPVs have over UFC and MMA is that boxing matches are introduced by the velvet-smooth tenor of Michael Buffer, while UFC gets the scratchy-throated, coattail riding, cue-card defying Little Brother Bruce.

Did you know the Micheal and Bruce Buffer are half brother.

Bingo! I love people who are affiliated with boxing are always talking shit about MMA. That’s because they know their on there way out. I used to watch boxing all the time back in the early 90’s and even up until MMA was broadcast more heavy on cable TV, but I can’t stand to watch that crap anymore. There’s nothing exciting about it.

That explains a lot Jason Bang. I thought it was more like the Arnold and Danny DeVito thing from the movie Twins.

One day, when we are all old and gray, we will tell our kids that there used to be a contact sport called boxing, where you were only allowed to punch and could only do so when the guy was standing up. They had big puffy gloves and wore their shorts up near their nipples.

I can respect boxing,u know, the whole Rocky thing, but the reality is,…… mma is simply better. The Rocky movies r what inspired me 2 train, but I wouldn’t waste my time on a boxing match when I can watch Randy Couture whoop on Tito or Big Tim for 25min a piece. Those fights are funny as hell.

Everyone wants to watch mma for these reasons…
Guys = Ring girls (and hoping it goes all 3 rounds).
Girls = Fighters (well maybe not so much this one…) LOL.
Boxers = For the stand-up fist to face smashing (Bonnor/Leben/Griffin).
Kickboxers & Karate/TKD/Kung-fu =For kicks (Liddell/Cro cop/ Anderson).
Wrestlers = For the shoots and ground control (Tito/Koscheck/Couture/Monson).
Judo guys = For the throws(Karo Parisyan).
Rednecks = Fellow rednecks (Hughs/Silvia/Pulver)
BJJ = Submissions from out of no-where at the last minute…(Serra/Babalu/
People who like Unrestrained aggression = Rampage/Diego Sanchez/Arlovski)
People who enjoy something a step up from a bar brawl = S. Carter/
Canadians watch it for = GSP…
Does boxing still have ring girls… ITs been so long since I watched a ppv.

De La Hoya/Mayweather will be the last boxing fight I will ever pay for. I feel the boxing world is in denial. UFC will take over
by Stafo on Apr 14, 2007 3:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ever since Holyfield,Tyson,Lewis have retired or fell behind boxing is much fun to watch anymore. The only big fight coming up is Dela Hoya v.s Big mouth.UFC is Taking over without a doubt.Eventually mma fighters will be making 10 to 20 million a fight.

Boxing is often just so boring and so poorly marketed. Very few popular fighters and it seems that exciting fights, especially in heavyweight, are LONG GONE. All the fights now seem to consist of 10 punches thrown per round in between 3 minutes of leaning on the other guy or gross mismatches. I’ve always watched the sweet science but it really is on a downward slide…
