UFC Quick Quote: Serra doesn't like two Miletich boys

"Matt Hughes is an arrogant asshole, jerkoff and bully. He wouldn't pull the same shit with me that he did to Georges (St. Pierre) on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) because he knows I'd tell him to go fuck himself."
-- UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra had some choice words on BubbaTheLoveSponge.com for Matt Hughes today, who will most likely be his first title defense later this year, according to recent statements from UFC President Dana White. He also called Hughes' training partner, Tim Sylvia, an ogre who thinks he is a big shot. In addition, Serra ripped on Sylvia for his appearance on Blind Date a few years ago.

Awesome! Finally a fighter says the same thing I have been saying for a while now. I think Serra is cool as shit, and although GSP is one of my favorite fighters, Serra has gained allot of respect from me.
UFCMania, I love this post. I don’t think it will change the mind of the Arrogant people who love Hughes, but I am glad that a another fighter said it outloud.

hughes is gonna look like the good guy now because he’s gonna say ok whatever, and then proceed to whooping matt serra’s ass…this is matt serra getting a big head after winning the belt after he said that exact thing would never happen, hughes is gonna kill this guy…

My respect for matt serra continues to climb. Hughes is an arrogant fuck and I hate tim sylvia more than any other fighter.

I agree with Spida. Serra was the good guy until he said this. Im a Hughes fan and he’s is cocky but most times he backs it up. Serra shocked the world but he’ll be brought down to earth when he meets hughes. Ive never heard hughes say anything like that about any of his opponents, so a classless move by serra.

I love this post. Hughes and Tim are arrogant and annoying. I can’t wait until Serra knocks out Hughes or breaks his arm like Timmy. They’re both done!

Serra isn’t saying anything new here, he had the same stance on Hughes as when he was on the show. Serra isn’t getting a big head since winning the title, he’s just keeping it real.

Serra is going to have a big head, but I think that he could not have said it better. Serra probably knows the real Hughes, but most of you have never heard the hatred that many people inside the business have for Hughes. I posted it once, and do not really feel like doing it avian, but I chatted with Evan Shoman, a MMA artist, and he absolute hates Hughes for reasons he cannot say, and I trust him 100 percent. I liked Matt Hughes before Evan showed so much hate, but with that much dislike, and his cocky attitude, I dislike him.

I don’t think this is Serra being arrogant. He’s been saying this for a while, not just since last Saturday.

Classless? Maybe…..but is it not the truth?! I sure think so. Give him credit for having the balls to say what he thinks…publicly! IF Hughes beats Serra which is possible and after last weekend it is also possible Serra could win. Who would have thought…GSP will be back and he will destroy which ever Matt is in his way.

Right, Serra has been very open about his dislike for Hughes. The radio interview, however, was a little more raw than usual. That’s probably because it was on satellite. But he even said, “I’ll tell Hughes to his face. I have no problem telling this to him directly — he knows how I feel.” So, this didn’t come from just his win at UFC 69 — it’s been brewing since the old days when they were on cards together. Serra says they used to be on better terms, but when Hughes won the belt he turned into a dick. Serra also mentioned that BJ Penn called him and left him a message congratulating him on the win over GSP, saying there are a lot of good guys like Penn in MMA but Hughes isn’t one of them.

you never know what people say off-camera. and I wouldn’t be surprised to find hughes to be the type of guy that would say something or act a certain way with people off the record but then switch to ‘good-guy’ mode for the media.
as for serra I like his honesty. maybe it wasn’t the smartest move but i respect the fact that he doesn’t try to throw on a persona.
point is, none of the fans really know the fighters. everything we know about their personalities is what we know from the tv or the net. but brutally honest comments such as serra’s just helps paint a clearer picture.

Matt has always shown that he’s able to back up his words. He’s probably thinking that since he beat GSP standing up, he has a good chance w/Hughes. I would love to see Serra beat Hughes and then a GSP/Serra rematch.

We all know that Matt speaks his mind. I don’t think this was ‘out of line’ on his part, he just shoots from the hip. And after watching The Ultimate Fighter we all know that about him.
Good to see being the champ hasn’t changed him.

Spida, I think you are are a huge fan of these guys, and I respect your dedication. I feel like Tim really crossed the line when he used steroids. This is why I dislike him, and not only that but he, just like Diego, Koscheck, and even Pulver at times, talks allot of shit before a fight. If they did it respectfully then great, but they do not. Honestly I think that when you use steroids you offend fighters. One incident Of hearing Bas Rutten stating that he hated fighters that use steroids (ala KIMO at the time) and said that they should not be allowed in the sport. I think Serra has plenty to dislike Silvia about that even the fans know about, and I am sure there is more that the fans do not know about. I do not think he has a big head because of the title, but he should feel proud that he just dominated George St. Pierre after many people thought it was impossible.

Unfortunately in the new world of MMA You have to have class if you are going to be liked. I think Matt Hughes is a great fighter, but I also think he is a different breed, that in time if he does not step up his game he will be pushed out of the competition. I feel Serra falls in this category also. If Serra comes out and dominates fights standing, then I believe he can be just as good as Pierre, but the couple of min he did it against Pierre will not sway me to believe (just yet) that he can stay dominate. Matt Hughes is has wrestlers fighting style, and unless he can begin to improve his stand up game, I think other fighters will began to push him away. As for Serra being cocky, I do not think he said he will kick his ass, or that he said he would dominate Tim Silvia like he did GSP, all he did was show his feelings towards a couple of people he dislikes.

Serra has quite a mouth for sure, most here are hypocrites, if hughes said something like this we would never hear the end of it, but serra its ok…LOL. I have mixed feelings towards serra and personally think his true hate for hughes comes from hughes destroying his hero royce gracie. People here make me laugh at how fickle they are and how they sway so easily, serra is a freaking joke as a fighter, come on the guy won the lottery and now his s**t doesn’t stink? Sanchez destroyed riggs and everone was wow such stand up and then he fights koscheck…, decision fights are far more telling to a fighters over all skill than a quick round one tko. Randleman ko’s cro cop and he’s the man?, look at there next fight, serra’s win over gsp doesn’t impress me too much because I have a realistic sense of his over all abilities and don’t get swayed by flukey tko’s. If its a normal night hughes will own serra and make him look like s**t and all the band wagon jumpers will be saying…how could this happen?, and jump wagon again. People talk way too much about things they know f**k all about, I don’t personally know Hughes or serra so I’m not going to give an indepth analysis on his personality like some dorks on this site.

Going off his last two performances, I think Serra truley has a shot! I’m still in shock on his win over GSP! GSP got blasted!!!

Look at all his other boring ass fights, I wouldn’t sit through his chris Lytle fight again for money. I mean it’s cool he won and all, only who would ever want to see him fight again if he had lost? I just see all these new matt serra fans praising his name and to me it’s like the fake fans who wear a teams hat after they win the superbowl even though they never cheered for the team beforehand. And I know people like SerraSoldier will argue and say they have been Serra’s #1 fan all along, only I read these posts all the time and these guy’s weren’t on Serra’s band wagon a week ago and if they were they were quiet as a fuckin church mouse

Wow, a band wagon huh. I am for sure on no band wagon, and I cannot say what Hughes would do to Serra because I have never seen them fight each other. Serra would never had said those thins if it was not for the fact that they are true. I feel that some people on here are only looking for confrontation, and that is it.
My personal opinion,
I have mad respect For Serra doing what he said he was going to do. Do I think he could do it again? No! Will he do it again? I don’t know! I hate Matt Hughes, but I respect his fighting ability. Do I think Serra could beat him? No! Will Serra beat him? I don’t know! Do I hope he beats? Of course. I am very upset that some people will not quit attacking other commentors, and only talk about the fighters. (By attacking I mean calling them names). To reference another’s comment, and disagree is one thing but calling them Hypocrite and know it alls is disrespectful.

That whole statement there shows exactly why he doesn’t like Matt. Georges being respestful to everybody even declaring Matt Hughes as his idol on National TV, Hughes, instead of respecting GSP what does he do belittle him on TV and insult his abilities. I like Hughes as a fighter, but when he opens his mouth and projects his political and religious views on an audience that is only watching to see people fight it makes me puke in my mouth a little.

Screw Hughes he thinks he’s a badd ass. As for Sylvia I wonder how that knot on his head felt the next day after the Randy Couture clinic he attended back at 68. Sylvia is out of Heavyweight contention considering how deep the Heavy’s are now that Big Nog join the pack along with CroCop, Werdum, and Arlovski looking to have title shots soon. Back to Hughes cocky attitude. This dude might take out Serra, but you know damn well Serra will not take him lightly. Can you imagine Serra beating Hughes right after beating GSP for the title. I think it would be awesome. I believe Serra is one of the most underated fighters in all of UFC history. He proved it on Saturday night. He will still be underdog against Hughes and he’s going to pull it off. I can’t wait to see that dumb ass look on Hughes face after he gets beat.

The fights are all about matchups. Serra was impressive with his hands against GSP, watching it over it doesnt look like a fluke, it just looks like serra has bricks in his hands. So in a Hughes/Serra match i give the standup edge to Serra. In terms of wrestling its Hughes obv. On the ground i think Serra is much better but i think he might have a tough time getting the top position because of Hughes’ great wrestling. I dont see them making this a standup war, it will probably be a boring five round decision or end in a submission. My gut feeling is telling me that Serra’s short very thick build will cause Hughes problems in terms of wrestling and that Serra will win via decision.

Jim,
If you would have read some of my past comments about Hughes, and how I do know some things about him, then you would understand. I used the word hate in the context of comparison. I have no true hatred for anyone, but again I have my reasons. Go back and read my comment on some of the other pages and you would see why I feel the way I do. I am not going to explain it every time I state that I dislike Hughes. I am far from disrespectful, I can only like a person not by what the have accomplished, but how they accomplish it. Matt has acted like dumb Jock, and on tv he acts like a good Christian, but when off camera I have heard that he is a “Black Hearted” man. (Evan Shoman MMA portriat Artist) The last thing I want to do is send Matt Hughes fans to Shoman’s page, so that is last time I will reference him.
Thanks for all those with decent comments, I enjoy reading them. Weather you like, dislike or not. Oh and by the way I am no fan of Serra, but I respect his win.

Jim,
Just to be clear, dude, stating an opinion on someone’s negative behavior “i.e., that Hughes is condescending and arrogant” is NOT being negative. If Serra were to say, “Matt Hughes is a shitty fighter and a shitty champion,” now that would be being negative. However, all Serra is doing is commenting on Hughes’ demonstrating, time and time again, his disrespectful and arrogant attitudes, both of which are universally recognized as being ‘negative.’
Get it straight dude. Don’t blame the messenger for pointing out that the former champ is an asshole. Think about it, more people respect and like Serra for being genuine and respectful whereas many people question Hughes’ arrogant behavior. Which one do you think is better to emulate, regardless of fighting records?

I cant stand MHs, or most Militech fighters for that matter ( bunch of closet gay dudes locked in a cabin in Iowa ), but MH lost his belt because he tried to stand with GSP. On UF, Serra was the know it all, nice to you guy — as long as you were kissing his ass. Disagree with him and he starts acting just like Hughes.
I think Serra has spent too much time as sensei of his dojo and thinks everyone in the world should treat him as “master”.
One other thing, at least Hughes keeps his insulting comments off-camera. Everyone thought Hughes was the good all-American kid until they started showing behind the scenes footage of him.
I hope Hughes slams him on his face, but I’ll give Serra credit IF he backs up his trash talk.

Ade i agree with you about saying that serra is down to earth and he has always been that way. Matt Hughes is a country ass racist in my book. if he has such negative thoughts about Canadians which is a entire country of people, not even a single race of people, but all types of different races of people live there and he says that they are not tough or some bullshit like that then you know he hates black people, mexican people and any other minory. i cant stand mat hughes and i hope he chokes on a bull dick.

God I love Bubba….
Serra is talking shit, question is will he be able to get passed Hughes? Advantage Hughes in my book…

Chris you are the one being disrespectful. You do not even know Matt Hughes as a person but you say you ‘hate’ him – strong words my man.
Well said….totally agree. (just my opinion don’t start crying please) Does anyone here think if it went to a decision, serra would have won?….I didn’t think so. Hughes has never lost a decision in 48 fights and somehow I don’t think its going to happen because decisions are won by ability not a fluky punch. I doubt hughes will risk getting knocked out and take it to the ground and it will be a 5 round snore fest. Yes serra is a bjj black belt but wasn’t royce gracie just as accomplished or more so?, maybe I’m wrong but I think hughes can handle him.

What you missed is that Serra’s win was a Fluke. and Hughes probably will win
So whenever someone gets their ass kicked while holding the belt, it’s a fluke? Suuuuuure. GSP got lucky with Hughes, Serra got lucky with GSP. Right.
I can’t wait to see the excuses fly when Hughes loses.
Serra doing a 1-punch knockout on GSP would have been a fluke. They faced off and GSP was overpowered. Call it a slip once, but if your legs turn to jello and you can’t make it 3 feet without falling, it’s called getting beat.
It’s funny how GSP is the only one that seems to get it: he was beat.

What kills me, is that Serra is every bit as much of a cocky dick as he accuses Hughes of being.
I’m so glad someone else sees this.

Nathan, please dont bring the Royce vs Hughes fight into this. There are many variables there that stacked up against Royce which resulted in his loss even though he was favored by many to win (including myself). I’m a huge Royce fan & have been since day # 1 but I am also a true overall MMA fan (not just a UFC fan) so I have to “keep it real” about that. Now, back to the Matt vs Matt debate. I respect everyone’s opinions about the why’s & why not’s of what Serra said but let’s be realistic here. Although I’ve been guilty of this in the past, not a single one of us in this thread can truly, truly say who the winner of the Matt vs Matt fight will be after what just took place with Serra vs GSP. Sure, we can all speculate with our hearts & explain why we think our personal favorite will win but there are no guarantee’s in this sport or any other. Everyone in this thread obviously has an appreciation for the art of combat on one level or another. Doesnt that mean we all have atleast one thing in common? Let’s agree to disagree. It’s ok to be passionate in your beliefs but I’m sure we all have something to offer in our MMA opinions that another can learn from on some level. I look forward to many more similar debates between you all in the future.

if you have been the 9-time ufc welterweight champion you have a little room to talk shit….I know matt hughes personally and he would do anything for anyone until they started talking shit to him. Serra is just mad that hughes beat his idols ass in front of millions. then again he has done that to numeruos people…and serra came from the ultimate fighter as what?? ohj yeah a second chance, who won with a punchers chance. no game plan or anything of serra was used in the fight, he got lucky, and i bet it won’t happen again especially againt hughes.

I’d say that, “Serra will hit Hughes so hard that his fans will cry,” but it doesn’t work since his fans are still crying from when GSP made him his bitch.

I think Jesse’s interveiw of Serra made the guy look like a saint… when the truth is, he is just as brash and much more of a shit talker then any other fighter in the UFC. Serra talks a LOT of shit, dislikes a LOT of people, and lets people know… which I respect. But he talking shit about how arrogant Hughes is, hi pot! meet kettle…
Im with a lot of these guys, its cool if you talk shit and back it up. Hughes has backed up more shit then anyone else in the welterweight division. Serra has talked a LOT more shit then anyone else in the welterweight division (outside of Stevenson, Kos, & Sanchez) so lets see if he backs it up.

After the horrendous initial shock resulting from the serra/gsp fight I’ve had more time to think about it and now realize serra pulled a couture, sort of, meaning perfectly exucuted game plan with a bit of luck. Gsp is a bit of a slow starter, he had problems in the first with penn, hughes popped him pretty good in the first and gave him a “flash” and then serra…..well we know how that went. Serra’s best chance would be in the first round with slow starter gsp and like dana said about lytles chances with hughes, that he should let it all hang out, exactly like serra did. Hughes has been there and done that and I really don’t think it will work with hughes but who knows for sure, he’ll take serra down and tire him out with his superior strength and then he’ll be far more vulnerable for the tko or submission. I don’t know how many here have wrestled with a guy who’s stronger that you, it really tires you out, a tool I think Hughes uses regularily. I realize now gsp underestimated serra’s stand up and was mainly concerned with serra’s submissions but ground and pound would have been the way to go for gsp, he’s spectacular in this department. I really don’t think gsps hands are his best quality, I think what makes his striking good is more his foot work and his kicks. I actually think gsp and hughes are close with there hands but gsps foot work is like a 9 and hughes would be a 2, hughes moves like he has rock’s in his legs. If serra had a better game plan with karo he would have won that one too, serra has been a victim of bad luck, not anymore…I doubt things could be better for him. Do I think serra if a better fighter than gsp, no not even close but I now don’t think it was all luck, mainly a hell of a lot of training, a perfectly executed game plan and a little luck. Do I think he could beat gsp again, I highly doubt it, I think gsp will come back better than ever as he’s done in the past after a loss.

Matt Serra may be right that Hughes is arrogant, but Hughes has every right to be. How many times did he defend his title? Serra is a piece of garbage that got lucky. GSP was looking way past this fight. If there is ever a GSP and Serra rematch, the fight would be over in 20 seconds, if even that long. Matt Serra is a punk. Hughes will wipe the floor with him. Matt Serra the sun had to shine on a dogs ass some day!!!

I agree with Nathan, Serra knew exactly what he was doin. and serra said nothing of hughes fightin skills so slow down on the good ole country lynchin SERRA can say whatever he wants about what kind of person hughes is

Punchers Chance…OK, why talk shit if your a nine time champ, set an example, why embarress somebody that has only ever showed you respect and praised you on national TV. (GSP)
What was the whole point on embaaressing him on TUF??? So the guys there could think he’s cool….it’s not High School. Grow up, seriously.

There are people fit and stay as champs and those that can’t handle the pressure. Maybe GSP just isn’t ready to be champion for an extended time. We’ll find out if Serra has what it takes. If I had to bet I all I had. I would put it on Hughes. Hughes has the hunger to regain the title and he knows what it takes.

Are you serious?? Jealous? I only wish “the most dominating welterweight champ in UFC history” would act like one and return the respect that even his opposition shows him. How long has the UFC been around? not that long and theres alot of time for the history to change.

You are watching a different UFC than I am. Matt Hughes has served well as UFC champion. Why can’t he get excited over the outcome of a fight? He isn’t out there calling Serra names. Serra has been champ a few days and he’s already saying stupid things. Too many love to pick on Matt Hughes. It’s always easy to pick at the guy on top. It’s a petty and ridiculous habit.

Yeah cause your boy serra has shown alot of respect to every person he has fought. Way to set and example by trash talking your first fight as soon as you get the best for the first time in his life. Good thinking there Jordan. Have you ever competed in anything beside a pie eating contest dude? If you embarass the person you get under their skin, which allows them to be flustered at fight time. Understand. And “punchers chance” is right on the money, how many knockouts has serra had in his career? 1, GSP. You seriously think that was his game plan to go and trade with one of the best strikers in mma. if you think that you are an idiot, seriously. Welcome to the real world son.

Hughes is a macho, tough, arrogant guy but so what?, so are most of the other mma fighters, why single him out. I sort of like serra but he definitely has a mouth on him and I do remember him “picking” on captain miserable, he’s not perfect only more likeable than hughes. I’m sad that gsp lost but I have to admit serra vs hughes is going to be a heated fight. I could be wrong, look at the diego/koscheck fight…I thought would be the best of the evening, turns out to be a snore fest and gsp/serra a predicted snorefest, the most shocking. Good point countryboy87 about hughes being a dick, I think its more of the way be comes across that rubs people the wrong way rather than his wording.

I just got a mental picture of Matt Hughes and Mark Coleman in Iowa cow tipping and chewing on grass. If Serra doesnt beat him, GSP will mop him up just like last time.
matt hughes is is going to destroy serra. chris lytle gave matt serra all he could handle. and hughes dominated lytle. matt hughes has fought the best fighters for about 4 years. give the man the respect that he deserves, he even fought RIGGS when he didnt have to. serra is going to tap out then gsp is going down next. hes got your IOWA FARM BOY in his jock. militech fighting systems is the best in the country PUSSIES.

Don’t forget, there’s no reason to be sad when Serra beats Hughes because you can just deny it as a win and call it a fluke.
by Maynard on Apr 13, 2007 11:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think serra’s win was a fluke but he was spot on and it was his best performance ever, as it was gsp’s worst. Serra’s win proves that no one is unbeatable and I must say he was spot on with his pre fight comments. If a fighter beats another fighter once in ten fights what does that mean?, it means the day he won he was the better man. Hughes was spot on when he said gsp beat him but does it mean he could beat him the next day, no it doesn’t. There are no constants in fighting like serra said when you zigg instead of zagg and make a mistake it could be all over. Gsp got caught and serra capitalized on it, gsp’s mistake, serra gain…just the way it goes. I admit I was a pretty poor sport myself about gsp losing and cryed fluke and was critical towards serra but after really thinking about it I feel differently.
by nathan on Apr 13, 2007 3:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Every dog has his day and serra is definitely having his, but sad to say I personally think he is in over his head, and will quickly disappear from the top 10 ten position, my prediction within a year. The more I watch the serra/gsp fight the more I think gsp was definitely not himself and watching serra, I think he didn’t look to good to me, the punch that did the damage he was swinging wildly with his head down. I honestly don’t think serra is even better than diego with his hands, and would love to see his next fight go to a decision so we can really see what he has. Most seem to think diegos hands were dangerous after the riggs fight and then he fights koscheck which was very telling. Good for serra that he won, he was the better man that night and I wouldn’t want to take anything away from him but I don’t have a short memory and common sense dictates you don’t go from a o.k striker to a superior one in a few months. Gsp on the other hand is young and very talented and I expect him to be on top again within the year. I really hope he gets his nerves under control, he really didn’t look like his explosive self and even looked off in the into music, if he gets the mental part of mma down he’ll dominate the welter weight division more impressively than hughes, we all know he has more talent.
