UFC 71: Burkman vs. Parisyan is official

Josh Burkman (8-3) recently signed the bout agreement to face Karo Parisyan (16-4) at UFC 71 on May 26, locking in a major showdown within the welterweight division, according to a recent MySpace bulletin from the "People's Warrior."
Here's a snip:
"I signed the fight today, me and Karo Parysian May 26th at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. Tickets go on sale monday! Thanks for the support and messages!"
We first passed along this unofficial news earlier this month -- to read that post click here.
Burkman is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Chad Reiner (13-2) at UFC Fight Night 8 earlier this year.
Parisyan is also looking to extend his win streak to two after outpointing Drew Fickett (28-5) on all three judges scorecards at UFC Miramar in December 2006.
Fickett is actually a common opponent for both fighters -- Burkman choked him out at UFC Fight Night 3 in January 2006.
It should be a competitive fight between two of the top fighters currently in the talent-rich 170-pound division.
In fact, a loss here will most likely see one of them drop several spots in the pecking order for a shot at the belt.

i think burkman is a very nice technically sound fighter, but karo is too much for most to handle and should win this one, i’d much much much much much rather see karo fight fitch, but i guess if karo lost again he wouldn’t be worth as much and same thing with fitch…really karo should be fighting koscheck here and diego should have fought matt hughes instead of lytle, but thats in a perfect world

I’ve had my eye on Burkman for a long time, since Horn beat him and spit on him (bastard!). I’m hoping to see him reach the top, so going through someone like Karo would be huge for him. If he does, he could be at the top in the future for a long time

This is a joke. Fitch should be handing Karo a beatdown. He’s already ran through Burkman.
Whats this about being spit on? Details…

I agree with spida, this is how I would like to see it play out, nevermind the fighter ranked #2 fighting #15 and that bull shit.
1. hughes vs diego winner gets title shot.
2. karo vs fitch winner gets loser of above.
3. koscheck vs burkman winner gets loser of above.
and work your way up the ladder.

Fitch is the Man. He Dominated Burkman. He Should be getting the shots at the top tear fighters not a guy that he pounded. I only hope that the UFC lets Fitch Fight where he belongs (at the top)
My Hopes for the Future
Hughes fights winner of GSP-Seara (GSP Rematch)
Fitch fights winner of Diago-Ko(Winner gets next title shot)

thecloser….what was that about Horn spitting on Burkman..?…I never heard such a thing.I’m not doubting you,it just suprises me that a Miletich fighter would do such a thing…..Also considering every time I hear Horns’ name people always talk about him with such respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See these matchups are why I want Mr. Matchmaker J. Silva to maybe give us a little write up on how these matches are made. I want to know the decision making process behind it. Maybe if we knew this then we would be more apt to accept matchups that most of us don’t see the logic behind…

You are all right about Fitch deserving this fight. Another point…Fitch and Kos will not fight each other (atleast that is what they say). Burkman is in no way at all in the same category as these other top 170 lb fighters. Burkman will get stomped on by these guys.

I like that idea Nate but i do think Burkman will win i like the underdogs lately especially since my man Lauzon KO’ED Pulver….i do agree it could go either way here but i just dont see a domination on either end but i do see burkman comin out of it via judges score cards

I want to see karo get back on track. I think he wins a tough fight here. He is one of the most interesting guys to watch. I like wildbill’s idea, but I suspect the matchups come down to a lot more than who fans want to see. I don’t think the UFC itself would admit it, but they have guys that they want to do well, and they line up stepping stone guys. They throw us a rare bone such as Sanchez and Koscheck, where the put two top teir guys together.

I’d like to see Karo take it, but his cardio is always the question. take his fight with diego for instance—Karo won that fight, but he was spent by the end third round which led to the infamous tooth shot.
burkman is a tough dude and i believe if he shows up healthy he can out-stamina karo. nevertheless, i’d like to see karo win because he is the most intelligent & exciting fighter in the ufc and would make a great champion.
Karo vs. GSP II!

Common Sense, ibread (and anyone else who is wondering)…
Burkman and Horn had real heat, and insults were exchanged back and forth on the internet and in person (this is before tuf 2). They fought and Horn caught him in a quick submission, then after the tap, spit on him as an exclamation point. He is usually classy, but lost his cool for that one. Anyways, hope Burkman can pull this one out, I know some feel it should be Fitch, but just because Burkman is fighting instead, doesn’t mean Fitch is worth anything less, I have a feeling Fitch is in for a big match soon too…

I am a big time Karo Parisyan fan…
That said, I am worried.
Burkman finished Drew Ficket pretty fast and efficiently.
Karo struggled… I am afraid Karo is in for a very very bad night, unless hes been working on his stand-up and is trying to sincerly finish a fight.
Ah………………. I just cant wait to see it.

Burkman is too physical for Karo, he will get GNP’ed to death.
by Derreke on Apr 24, 2007 11:09 PM EDT reply actions
I think Karo will do just fine, his judo is unrivaled, it will be near impossible for Burkman to not get caught and thrown at least once at somepoint. Can’t see him getting GnP’d by Burkman. And Karo is strong, real strong, I dont think being to physical will be a problem for him. Burkman has not fought near to teh level of competition that Karo has. I’m not sure if he will be ready for Karo, I think Karo might be on a different level. But still, this is one of those that is close, Burkman is good, and it should be a close exciting fight. Hard to call.

The only way Karo wins this fight is by submission.
