Werdum willing to fight Cro Cop for title
FabrÃÂcio Werdum (9-2-1) — the latest import from PRIDE FC — is set to make his Octagon debut at UFC 70 against former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (10-5).
It's a difficult first assignment, but one that the Brazilian is excited about, according to a recent interview with Tatame.com.
Here's a snip from Werdum:
"... I like face tough guys, famous guys like Arlovski, he is former champion of this category. I don't like to face someone who is starting now. Arlovski is dangerous standed up, he likes to do the counter attack, but I am training much Boxing. If I have to exchange punches with him I will and if I had the opportunity to take him down will be much better, because my good game is the BJJ. I will train a lot to do a good bout and be able to dispute the belt soon."
Werdum trained with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (22-4-2), who is also fighting on the May 21 card in Manchester, England. In fact, Werdum dispatched of Cro Cop's opponent, Gabriel Gonzaga (7-1), back in 2003.
Despite the friendship, Werdum claims that he would have no problem fighting his former training partner if both end up in title contention.
Here's another snip:
"If we have to face each other some day, we will. He wants the belt as like me. We will try to avoid this to happen, because we were from the same team, we have the same manager and we are friends. He wants me to go back there to train. I went to recently to do some seminars in and then I went to and we enjoyed the opportunity to meet him and I wanted to know how he was going on. We talked a lot."
Cro Cop, of course, could fight current UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture (15-8) later this year if he gets past Gonzaga. And if Werdum can topple the "Pitbull," he'll no doubt make a quick name for himself as a serious contender.
There's a lot of "ifs" in that equation, but it's good to know that Werdum is willing to put aside his personal feelings for 25 minutes if it was ever necessary.
Although, I'm not sure it's would be the smartest move on his part.

Werdum used to be Cro Cop’s BJJ trainer and Cro Cop taught him kickboxing in exchanged, but Werdum left Team Cro Cop after a dispute they had.
I am glad they are on good terms again and help each other out with their fights. Its good to switch up training partners before a fight, helps you see new weak spots in your game. I can’t emphasize on this too much – from own experience.
Anyway – I doubt Cro Cop will need alot of BJJ on Gonzaga, while I wouldn’t recommend Werdum to use standup against Andrei Arlovski. Nevertheless – I saw Werdum a few months ago against A.Emelianenko live and it was very impressive, considering Aleks is anything but an easy opponent.

Werdum is going to surprise some people. I can see this matchup late 2007, early 2008. He will beat AA.

There is no one in the UFC who can beat Werdum other than Mirko. AA is good fighter, but he has never fought out of the UFC ever. His range of opposition has been weak. Tim Sylvia beat him twice. Tim is good, but he is not top rated fighter. Werdum has faced much better fighters and has won.

Andre “Glass-Jaw” Arlovski isn’t ever getting the championship belt again. Not with guys like Cro Cop and Couture around, to name but a few.

I predict Andre arlovski will win this one, but I would much rather see arlovski/cro cop for my money’s worth.

FFS! Cro cop vs Fedor was the biggest mma match up ever- now it has to be Randy vs Fedor. I don’t think cro cop will beat Randy and then it’s up to the ufc to bring Fedor on board. If Chuck did step up to heavy like says he would I think he would get blown away by CC, Fedor AND Randy. It ain’t so simple 30lbs above light heavy.

Look you can say what you want about this guy…I say so far he’s an asshole. You want to fight Cro Cop for the title? Damn what everyone predicts for the future. A fighter should be in there focused on his fight or at least the champion of his weightclass (Randy Couture), if he wants the champs belt. To predict you win all your fights and Cro Cop wins all his leading to a showdown between you two is paying to much thought to the wrong stuff. Train for AA and let Cro Cop fight his way to being the champion. Then say, ‘I want to fight Cro Cop for the title’.

I agree that this guy is trying to be a poor man’s Nostradomus, but I do think that the scenario he is talking about could happen.
As for the Arlovski fight, you could make an argument either way. If it goes to the ground, Werdum will most likely submit Arlovski like he did to Aleks. That will only happen if Arlovski doesn’t catch him with that overhand right.

i hope my boy arlovski knocks this guy the fuck out, i know that its gonna be a tough ass fight, but this is one the ufc needs in its never ending battle over who’s fighters are better ufc or pride,

Fabricio Werdum is bad motherfu*ker. He’s seen the likes of both Emilienko’s and Cro Cop. He has outstanding JJ and can stand with ANYBODY, including AA, if the odds are 300 in favor of AA, I’m putting down a c-note.

I like a lot of the posts here. It seems many of you have no idea who Fabricio Werdum is.
by UrTastingToeCheese on Mar 27, 2007 5:26 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
They will in due time. I for one would rather see Werdum-Couture than CroCop-Couture, more interesting matchup considering what Werdum made out of Lindland, who’s a better wrestler than Couture in my opinion. This way Couture might try to avenge the loss of Lindland (both from Team Quest) and Werdum might be able to make himself a name among UFC fans (who apparently have no clue who he is). Of course not before Cro Cop takes the title from Couture.

you tapped…werdum beat Lindland when they couldnt punch, throw some punches in the mix and its a different game…and couture is by far a better mmartist than lindland

Yes, it was a grappling contest, but I was merely trying to establish an order, which goes (for me) like this: Werdum > Lindland > Couture in terms of grappling and groundgame. Now, after the (in my opinion) devastating loss of Sylvia due to a very improved stand-up by Couture I agree that Couture is a better MMArtist, but not a better grappler.

Nothing on Werdum but when was he the heavey weight champ??? Never… OK! This dude knows Arlovskis going to crush him! Hes a fucking pitbull! Before Arlovski even gets in the ring werdums going to try take him down. Cause if he dont… GOOD NIGHT! 1ST ROUND KNOCK OUT!!! you can bet on that!!!

Arlovski will never KO Cro-Cop. Everyone knows that Arlovski has a glass chandelier hanging under his nose – especially Arlovski.

Lindland over Couture? Lindland didn’t even out wrestle Rampage. Come on man.

CRO COP IS GOING TO BE CHAMPION AND ALL THIS THINGS YOU GUYS TALKING IS A CRAP.
Much love to CR COP fans.

I was comparing grapplers. You can’t use a fight against Rampage as a reference how good or bad someone is as a grappler. Regardless how good a wrestler you are – if someone like Rampage can overpower you simply because he has enormous physical strength this does not necessarily take anything away from your wrestling/grappling/JJ.
All I am saying is that Couture-Werdum would be alot more interesting than Couture-CroCop to me, because apparently alot of people underestimate Werdum at this point. I saw him live in the netherlands and the way he choked a veteran like A.Emeleianenko out was very impressive.

If we are talking about best fight that is for sure CRO COP VS.ICEMAN if ufc can make it I’ll be first persone to come and watch it live.

anyone who’s had a wrestling background seems to have done well at ufc.
i’m leaning on randy to be the heavyweight champ, tough, durable, smart. he made sylvia look foolish as he’d do to a.a.
i agree with you— tapped, randy vs werdum would be great to see, randy would find a way to beat fabricio.

I think AA wins this because his opponent is stuipd. Crop cop wins beats AA then stomps Courture. AA beats courture if he can walk after his beatdown. It comes to a rematch of AA vs Cro cop
Yes i can see the future.
oh and chuck will lose his belt in 10 years to Half human half robot rand Courture.

I feel very sorry for some of you on-line fans!
There are some of you that can read, have a normal working brain that allows you to comprehend the nature of things, but some of you are just useless.
If Fedor can’t wipe the floor with Mirko, even though he has great punching and grappling abilities! How the hell is AA or Randy, or anyone else in the UFC going to do it??
Come on, wake up people!
Yes, I admit. I am a Cro-Cop fan. Yes, I’m Croatian.
The heart is one thing, but the brain is an absolutely different matter!

Its true Mr Ramzes, Crop is the second best HW in the world. I think its so cool how Fedor and Crop Cop are like these Samurai characters, that just appear to be, so in focus before fights, that fights become like, anova day in the office for them. Not like the majority of UFC fighters, that let the fame and fortune get to them after a couple of wins lol, AA will get smashed by either of these guys, and hate to say it but Couture aswell.
