Tragic account of Gilbert Aldana drowning revealed

Last week, former UFC heavyweight Gilbert Aldana died among family and friends as the result of a tragic boating accident at Lake Pleasant in Arizona.
It was a big loss for the mixed martial arts community, but an even bigger loss for those close to "El Peligroso," including his wife and two sons.
Several of those friends and family members commented on UFCmania.com, providing us with a rare glimpse into the life of a man who most of don't even know, but were affected by his premature departure.
Now, some new details have emerged about that fatal day. And, we feel it's only right to include the entire passage.
More important, we encourage our readers to dig into their pockets and help out the Aldana family, who is all of a sudden without the family breadwinner.
After reading this account, UFCmania will certainly be getting something together for Aldana's widow and sons, who witnessed the unimaginable.
Here are more details courtesy of AdCombat.com:
"It's been a pretty rough week for the MMA community, particularly those of us here in Arizona who were close to Gilbert Aldana. I've seen a lot of questions and speculation on the net as to what happened to Gil, and I'll like to set the record straight.
On Sunday, 11 Mar 07, Gil and a fellow MMA fighter Dave Connant set out on Dave's boat at Lake Pleasant in AZ for a day of boating with their families. Just after putting the boat in, Gil's tee shirt blew into the lake. Dave turned the boat and told Gil to reach over and grab it as they came up to it. Gil said, 'Nah....it gives me an excuse to jump in.' With that, Gil jumped off the boat. Dave turned the boat again and came back to Gil. The wind was blowing pretty hard, the water had as big of waves as you get on Lake Pleasant and the water temp was about 50 degrees. When Dave got back to Gil, he could see that Gil was having trouble treading water and immediately jumped in after him.
Dave swam to Gil and got him turned around and began swimming him back to the boat. While this was happening, Dave's wife was throwing life jackets toward them, but the wind kept pushing them out of reach. At this point between Gil's size, the cold water and waves, Dave also began to have trouble staying afloat, but still held onto Gil. Dave's wife brought the boat as close as she could without running over Dave and Gil, and Dave managed to grab onto the boat. The boat was still drifting and began pulling Dave away from Gil. Dave had a hold of Gil's arm and was telling him to kick, and eventually lost his grip. Dave managed to get back into the boat and was trying to bring it back to Gil so he could hoist him aboard from inside the boat. Dave yelled for Gil to swim and Gil said, 'I'm okay' and then sunk out of sight. This occurred in front of Gil's wife and two young sons.
The speculation was that he had a heart attack or hit something when went in the water. The truth is that 50 degree water is very cold and saps your strength. The only reason we didn't lose two of our family is that Dave went in the water in 'rescue mode' and had adrenaline pumping.....Gil went in to get a shirt. Even with the adrenaline kick, Dave almost drowned as well.
As of Friday, 15 mar 07, Gil's body has still not been recovered. The dive team is going back out on Monday to try and recover him. I want to thank the MMA community for the huge outpouring of support for his friends and family. Gil's employer, Valley Protective Service has started a memorial fund to help his family. That’s a really sad story and it immediately reminds me of Ryan Bennnett because both guys died while spending time with their families and for them to witness that… just unimaginable… and who hasn’t jumped in a lake before? I’m sure if you figure that you can swim in a pool that it’s no different. That’s just not something you expect to be dangerous and could’ve happened to anyone. RIP

I met Gil twice and watched him fight several times. I can’t say I knew him very well, but the few times that I talked to him, I could see that you can’t judge a book by the cover. If you had to judge a man without knowing him you just have to know the people that surrounded him. His friends are allot like him. Not only will the Aldana family feel his loss, but every one that was a friend, every one that watched him fight, that passed him on the street, down to the ones that shook his hand. I feel for the ones that never knew him at all……… So here is to the ones that really knew him………BIG GIL……. YOU WILL BE MISSED!!!!!!

Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you know we experienced a tragic accident two Sundays ago on March 11, 2007. For those of you who do not know we took our boat out onto Lake Pleasant, AZ with Dave’s best friend Gilbert and his family.
Gilbert’s shirt flew into the water and he went in to get it. He immediately showed signs of struggling and Dave jumped in to help. After several types of attempts to rescue Gil we were unable to save him and he went under. The investigators believe he went into shock from the cold water and was unable to move his arms and legs. Unfortunately we have been unsuccessful after two and a half weeks of searching to find his body.
The Sheriff’s Department has called off the search.
David’s company has Hired a gentlemen who has been involved with High Profile water recoveries to Continue the search. Daily, there are 20-30 family members standing on the shore of the Lake, waiting for news. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers.
We are trying to raise money for Gil’s family (his wife and two young boys) to help pay the bills since Gil was the sole income for the family. Gilbert was also an employee of our company.
Christina, Gil’s wife, stays home with the boys and spends time taking Jr. their oldest, who has Autism, to his therapy sessions. We are hoping that donations will help her out for awhile so she can continue for a bit to say home with the boys.
A memorial fund has been unable to be set up due to the fact that they have not released a death certificate. Therefore, Dave’s company has set up an account BofA in Christina’s name for now. If you are interested please send a check to:
Christina Aldana
c/o Valley Protective Services, Inc.

We will deposit it into her account. No amount is too small. Think about the cup of change you probably have laying around and go cash it in! If you have any questions give me a call or email me. Please forward this to anyone who you feel may be interested in helping out.
