Video: Diego Sanchez trains with Oscar de la Hoya

Looking to improve his boxing skills and endurance, Diego Sanchez is in Puerto Rico training with WBC Super Welterweight Champion Oscar De La Hoya for his upcoming bout with Josh Koscheck at UFC 69, according to a video on UFC.com.
De La Hoya -- The Golden Boy -- is preparing for his huge showdown with Floyd Mayweather on May 5 -- perhaps the last boxing pay-per-view (PPV) event I will purchase in a very long time.
Already, Sanchez has enlisted the services of close friend and former Mexican Olympian, Francisco "Panchito" Bojado, to fine tune his stand up skills.
If his first round stoppage of Joe Riggs in December 2006 is any indication, things seem to be working.
Even though it's only a few weeks, Sanchez will no doubt pick up some important tips from one of the most accomplished boxers in recent history for the upcoming bout.
Now, he just has to keep things standing against the former NCAA wrestling champion come April 7.

As much as I hate to admit it… It will be hard for Diego to stop the takedown… It’s gonna be a hell of a fight :D

Good move by Sanchez..
But I think good standup is something you either have or you dont. You cant train into being a force on your feet similar to Anderson, Mirko, or Chuck. But you can train technique that will help.

Wow. Theres really no one better in the world to teach him ‘pure’ striking and possibly conditioning. Its a great move for Sanchez to learn perfect striking and may keep Oscar training hard for Mayweather in May.

Sanchezs stand up is already better then Kos, i think Diego is going to make quick work of Koshcheck

How, exactly, did Anderson, Mirko, and Chuck become forces on their feet?
Striking is Diego’s weakest area, as we just witnessed again against Karo. But being his weakest does mean he IS weak at striking. The guy is a complete fighter, and if he learns anything from De La Hoya, GSP’s reign will be short, and Kos will be dead.

After hearing that Diego is training with Oscar de la Hoya, I am real excited to see how much his stand up has improved. Digeo’s condition is out of this world.

I am sick of both these clowns.
OoOooh the nightmare… wetdream more like it.

There is no doubt that Mr. Kos can take Mr. Sanchez down. The question you have to ask is, “Can Kos keep the ‘lizard’ down?”. You need more than power take downs to keep an opponent on the ground and if Diaz’ bjj skills couldn’t keep Diego down, I don’t see how Kos can do it and be dominant enough without worrying about Diego getting back up. Diego Sanchez via anything he wants, 1st round.

If Diego wins this fight he will have hit a UFC record for an MMA record of 20 perfect wins. The closest to that I belive was a 19 straight streak of wins, oh and how I see this fight, no, how I know this fight is going to end is in a judges decision, all in favor of Diego.
We saw how they fought on the show, Diego has great Ju-Jitsu, Kos is an All-American Top Team champ, so as far as submissions go, it will just be a war, and hopefully a lot of blood involved too.
Someone should even take me up on that bet too, I will even PayPal you $100 if it goes another way!

If i was Diego i would train BJJ and wrestling rather than his stand up game. We all know what Kos is going to do. Dose everybody remember what happened on the show against Leben, he took him down and just layed on top of him. Kos only way to win in my opinion is take him down and keep down to get the decesion.

i agree with jorge, diego by decision, seems obvious to me…but i don’t know where robin gets off calling diego a clown and all that shit, thats crazy talk, diego is pound for pound the best there is
by tha spida on Mar 17, 2007 10:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Naw I think Diego by stoppage. I’ll take that bet if you want Jorge.

I believe Diego vs Kos odds are 2:1, obviously in Diego’s favor. I respect Diego’s game, but I don’t like the guy personally, I’m not sure if it’s the stupid tai chi sh*t he does at the beginning of fights or if it’s the bible thumping, i.e., always thanking “god”. I’m not sure what it is, I just really hate the guy, and I hope Koscheck wins via hay maker 1st round. Lizard vs Kos is way more of an exciting match up than GSP vs Terror.

IDK why every1 thinks Diego cant Wrestle with Kos. Kos is more skilled, but in their first TUF fight, the wrestling was even with DIego winning the striking in the decision victory. I dont think Diego will out wrestle him, but he has enough skills to keep Koz at bey. I dont think Koz can do damage unless he mounts and i dont think he’ll be able to get to full mount more than once or twice. Diego is ridiculously quick, and his stamina is top of the line. His hands have been better (One punch KO vs Riggs) and now with these couple weeks with Oscar its only gettin better. I got Diego rd 2 TKO.

I agree on what jorge said, that does sound like a likely conclusion, kos was submitted by drew fickett though so he is submitable, and diego is good anywhere pretty much.
hahahahah i’ll still take up that bet!!
by Alexander on Mar 18, 2007 1:54 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
look plane and simple kos does’nt have the killer instinct that diego does.kos is a wrestler for the most part and nothing against that I was a wrestler in high school and all that jazz, but this isn’t a wrestling match is’st MMA.
I say diego by tko or submission and you can take that to the bank.

After watching the Fight Night Marathon today, Kos reminded me of something…
After beating Goulet, he said he had finally finished someone and fuck all the internet assholes that say all he does is lay and pray, and then he fights Joslin, and what does he do?….
Diego via crucifix…get it?
by MoreThanUFC on Mar 18, 2007 2:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
… kos was submitted by drew fickett …
Kos was technically subbed because he couldnt tap. Why? Because he was already unconscious from Ficketts knee. He never has been subbed via tapping. But who cares?
Diego is worlds above Kos. The lay and pray wont work, so as I’ve said before…
Diego via crucifix.

Diego and Oscar are only cardio training, if they were to spar Diego would get knocked the f*** out. The Kos matchup should reviel how Diego matches up against a stronger opponent. Given how Matt and GSP have that retard strength, Diego’s last fight he was under weight. But really they’re young still and theres a lot of time for things to go wrong in either one of their careers. I’d hate to see GSP ever lose but he’s only human.
by Jordan on Mar 18, 2007 5:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why would Diego only get cardio training? I don’t believe that for a minute. There’s alot of ways for Oscar to teach, show and mentor Diego without ‘real’ sparring.
by Tommy on Mar 18, 2007 5:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
They Both have strict schedules, I’m not saying he’s not getting any help, but there’s only so much they both can do together without deteriorating Oscar’s agenda. Oh I’m sure Diego’s learning some sick counters. It’ll be interesting indeed to see how he develops, but if they’re both using the same trainer then I’m pretty sure he was always getting the same advice anyways. I heard that GSP was training under the same coach as well.

But honestly it’s MMA, there’s enough pro boxers that converted over…it doesn’t really influence me on my opinion of a fighter

Kos is a chump, Diego 1st round ko just to make a statment, if Kos wins it will be the biggest upset of the night

First and foremost diego is NOT the pound for pound best out there he isn’t the top 20 for that matter. If karo was more aggressive and had better cardio he would have won, diego has amazing cardio and is relentless but too say pound for pound the best out there, oh my god…….I highly doubt anyone that actually knows what there talking about would even toy with the idea. Gsp is light years ahead of him on every level, bj penn is far more talented than him only lacking cardio and theres so many more. I actually think koscheck may get a decision over him there last fight was so close and in my opinion koscheck is the one who is more improved. Mark my words the nightmares winning streak is very soon coming to an end, I guaranteed it will be this year.

you bet it will, diego talks and acts like the ultimate warrior to much if you ask me and i dont really care who wins this fight, they wont beat gsp and if matt hughes can come back they wont beat him either,i dont care what anybody says, when your a fighter thats considered unbeatable, had dana hanging with you, were a poster child and marketed heavily by the ufc like matt and tito were, your gonna get an ego it happens to everyone, you ride that confidence and when someone does beat you imagine what it does to you none of us understands that cause we arent on that level, but look what happens, dana will jump on someone elses coattails, like hes doing to chuck,is it just me or does dana white remind you of eric bischoff from wcw when eric bischoff was hanging out with the nwo always on tv hanging out with hulk hogan, well liddells danas hulk hogan!!whatcha gonna do brother!!???

I see Diego training with Oscar as looking passed Kos..him training his hands with a talented boxer is a good thing, but its not like Kos is just gonna box with him……his only weakness in the Kos fight is takedown defense, his hands are already better than KOS…Oscar obvioulsy not teaching him that takedown defense…I figured he would be taining with really good wrestlers, which im sure hes doing that too…but im pretty sure Kos already knows he cant stand with very many guys, deigo being one of them…so for this particular fight Oscar wont be helping diego much…but long term…ive always said that this fight would go to decesion, im sticking with it…by the way what the hell is training with deigo going to do to help Oscar win his fight??

…by the way what the hell is training with deigo going to do to help Oscar win his fight??
Exactly, Oscar would be carrying Diego
by Jordan on Mar 19, 2007 11:28 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not really. I mean yes of course, but Oscar’s human. He’s been fighting a long time and like many people he likes to shake up his partners. You guys seem to know boxing so you know how many times Oscar has switched training camps as well. Not only because of dissagreements but as he says he likes to be around different people with different routines as to keep him motivated to work out hard as well. At Oscar’s level with his supposed to be last fight its not like he’s trying to learn new things…just trying to be in the best shape he can for Floyd. Being around another spanish up and coming fighter is what motivates Oscar right now..so right on for both of them.
by Tommy on Mar 19, 2007 11:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont know Tommy…this is an MMA site, but as far as Oscar goes, Diego wont be able to help him, and training is training…if he spars with Diego then hes going to dominate him everytime…thats not preparing him for a great boxer like Mayweather….it looks to me like he’s just in it for the paycheck, like when he faught Hopkins and got dominated…but no im not really into boxing anymore…compared to mma, it would be a little better than watching wwf right now…its going downhill
by MMA Dude on Mar 19, 2007 12:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If training was just training there should be no differance from camp to camp but whatever.
by Tommy on Mar 19, 2007 12:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Oh and I must say…are you really saying Oscar’s doin it for the check? Wow the Goldenboy needs the money huh? forget the fact he’s almost as rich as Don King…he needs the money. come on mmadude be for real here.
by Tommy on Mar 19, 2007 12:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Diego in my opinion is a pretty good fighter he’s aggressive, has lot of heart and great cardio but not overly talented in any one area though and is not the brightest bulb out there. Gsp on the other hand is a smart guy and trains like an animal in the wrestling department, you have to to beat guys like hughes and keep koscheck at bay. Like couture said I don’t think diego will be able to stop koschecks take downs and we’ll see diego on his back most of the fight. The moment diego has him in trouble on his feet koscheck will take him down and score with the judges. I actually think koscheck might get a split or majority decision, I guess we’ll find out april 7.
by nathan on Mar 19, 2007 1:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
no tommy im not saying he needs the check…hes got more money than I can dream of…but he was once the golden boy, and as of late he has almost has become a joke…he has retired, then came back and hasnt looked very good…im saying hes not beating maywether (the best boxer in the world right now)in a boxing match by training with Diego, and he cant beat him on lorals/credintials alone, mayweather is too good…im just wondering what hes getting out of this…Randy comes back and trains with for Sylvia by sparring and rolling with huge men…DelaHoya comes back to fight the best and prepares by sparring with diego
by MMA Dude on Mar 19, 2007 1:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think he’s a joke. I like and respect Oscar and personally I’m pulling for him over hit n run Mayweather. You said he was doin it for the check not me. I just found it funny that you could say Oscar was doin it for a check from Diego. Talk about a big difference in bank accounts.
by Tommy on Mar 19, 2007 1:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
hahaah ohh no…i was talking about taking the maywether fight for the check…not helping diego train…i doubt diego pays him there, but i could be wrong
by MMA Dude on Mar 19, 2007 1:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Oh ok…I see…however. I don’t see Oscar needing even that for a check. Remember he makes money on so many other fighters its crazy. Him, Hopkins and the rest of the GoldenBoy Productions Group made sure they continue to get paid even after retirement. I bet Oscar wins this fight.
