UFC 70 on Spike for FREE and not HBO?

spike tv logoWith the HBO deal mired in details — and UFC 70 right around the corner — rumor has it that the pay-per-view (PPV)-worthy show will air on SpikeTV, according to WrestlingObserver.com.

That's right, the April 21 event that features international mixed martial arts superstars such as Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Michael Bisping, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Ryoto Machida, Forrest Griffin and others will be just like any other UFC Fight Night.

Only it'll be a whole lot bigger and a whole lot better.

Here's a snip:

Dana White said that regarding the broadcast of UFC 70 on 4/21 from Manchester, England into the U.S., that nothing is finalized right now, but it will most likely be on Spike and not HBO.

If this turns out to be true, it'll be a boon for fans. With UFC 69 airing two weeks prior on April 7, coughing up more scratch to order another UFC event might not factor well into the budget.

It's one of the reasons that made the potential debut on HBO so attractive -- many fans already subscribe to the premium cable channel. However, if that can't happen, a FREE show on SpikeTV would be even better.

Thank you, Dana White. Thank you. Make it happen.

“most fans have the premium cable channel”

I love ya, but the UFC demographic mostly includes high school to college age people who are lucky if they have basic. I know I dont pay the extra $20 a month on DirecTV. I hope it happens, but it sounds like Dana is in negotiations and is sending a signal, “You dont come my way, I’ll pop it up on Spike for free and laugh all the way to the Men’s Spa counting the ad revenue.”

Wow thats increadible!!! But how can they do that? Surely they will be loseing tons of money by not selling it on pay-per-view? how do you make over 200 million in a year on pay-per-view then just give it away? Is spike or hbo willing to pay that kinda money? Although if I had to pick I hope they go with hbo…you may have to pay but its pennies to watch it in hbo hd.

This needs to happen. It will only benefit the UFC.

by wildbill on Mar 9, 2007 9:50 AM EST reply actions

i can see them doing this with ufc 69, but not 70…they can make waaaaay more money if 70 is on ppv….but if it is on spike i will shit myself and love dana forever….and mtufc is right,im 22 years old, i dont know anyone with HBO…but i know a shit load of people with spike…..who wants to pay more for a chanel where they show the same movies over and over and over again…its kinda a rip off in my eyes

Alright, Alright, Alright – I reworded the HBO line. Cripes. MTU is always starting trouble ;). I personally dont know anyone who doesn’t have it. The real point here is that this we might get a real treat if the HBO deal drags on. I think this is less about money and more about negotiation, playing hardball.

Hey I’m in my thirties, upper middle class and I won’t buy HBO for the simple reason that it sucks. I couldn’t justify buying it for one event unless it was going to be on every month. Why buy HBO when you have on demand movies with dish tv and the movies don’t suck?

by wildbill on Mar 9, 2007 10:09 AM EST reply actions

thanks ufcmania….will this effect how much the fighters are payed?? Or will it all work itself out somehow? Im pretty sure UFC wont get payed nearly as much as a PPV, but with the money theyre pulling in, i think its nice for them to do this everyonce in awhile

by MMA Dude on Mar 9, 2007 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I have absolutely no problem if they show the event on SpikeTV, maybe we’ll get to see the entire card? Yeah right, and pigs will fly on that day too :)

Question: Is it a problem with the PPV technology that is preventing this event from being shown via the normal PPV means? Or is it a distance/timezone reason why its not being broadcast on PPV as per normal?

Does England get Spike tv????

by MMA Dude on Mar 9, 2007 10:34 AM EST reply actions

This would be an amazing deal. It would be the equivalent of company paying it’s shareholders a dividend of $40. They should consider doing it every year.

by Andy on Mar 9, 2007 10:41 AM EST reply actions

Ok, here is why they would air a mainline UFC show on a cable channel (if it would ever happen.)

Zuffa just signed a HUGE deal with a few pay per veiw networks in Europe. This is the FIRST UFC fight to be televised in Europe, hence why the card is so blocbuster and multi-national. Zuffa is trying to break open the European market for MMA, so Im sure that is more important then makeing a few million in the states, where UFC is one of the biggest attractions as of right now. Showing UFC70 on Spike with this sort of card would bring more people to the table, just like the debut in Europe.

Either way, Im watching this fight. Only drawback with Spike is, its not in HD! =D

The UK have bravo tv which is like spike tv. But i think its going to be PPV for the UK veiwers this time on Setanta Box Office.

Its not big deal we usually get the fights the day after for free with ads on Bravo.

I have to say that having the odd free event surely enlarges your audience and increases the potential sales for the next one that is PPV. I know alot of my friends would never have paid for it a year ago but after we have become fans through Bravo and the free tv.. we are all signing up for UFC70.

hell yeah, free ppv

This sounds very promising, but I’ve learned before not to count on Dana’s statements b/c he often says things before they are truly going to come into fruition. I’ll wait until it’s confirmed before I get excited.

three words super f***ing sweet!!!….and the way i figure it they owe me one for the ufc 67 non title card i payed for a title fight and did not recive one.also the shity ufc cards as of late.

by mike on Mar 9, 2007 11:39 AM EST reply actions

none of the ufc 70 willbe a title fight though, so youre not getting your title fight mike, just a lot of kick ass fights..im sure youll be ok with that though

by MMA Dude on Mar 9, 2007 11:42 AM EST reply actions

could ufc not make the same if not more cash selling ad space on Spike rather then making us pay 40$ every month? So many people watch ufc now in the states you would think that would get some cash commercial wise.

by pinman828 on Mar 9, 2007 11:43 AM EST reply actions

its gonna be a good ass card, i hope forrest and arlovski both win, but i don’t know, gonna be some tough fights…

There will be so much free UFC-related stuff on tv in April that they’re bound to garner
a whole slew of new fans come May and the summer. That’s probably the battle plan. Works for me.

The AA/werdum fight should be a war…even on the ground, I love the highlight real of AA hitting cabbages big melon, its just the right camera angle..

This is Great! I was actually thinking of skipping UFC 69 due to the fact i am ordering WrestleMania 23 and i was GOING TO order UFC 70. But now if UFC 70 is free i can order UFC 69 and not miss a beat! Hope it happens!

by Steven on Mar 9, 2007 12:41 PM EST reply actions

Well UFC 70 isn’t free for us guys in the U.K, there’s a channel called sentanta its where we(us in the uk) buy ppv or sky box office. It dosen’t matter anyway bought tickets for the show.

I just started reading the first few posts to this story and was agreeing with pretty much everyone.

1) I don’t have HBO.
2) 70 would make a lot more on PPV over 69.
3) I’m not complaining. Please put 70 on Spike.

Maybe I need a little TV education, but it makes no sense to me that the UFC would do a deal with HBO. Where is the money in that? PPV equals big bucks because it’s $40/TV. If it’s on Spike you know they are going to get crazy add revenue, and you better believe the UFC gets a cut of that. But where does HBO draw money from?

by Flaadog on Mar 9, 2007 5:21 PM EST reply actions

Krav Magist,
My guess is that its a time zone issue for US fans. London is 5 hours ahead of the EST. So the show starts at what, 3 am? I work nites so I’ll be up, but not many others.

HBO sucks, agreed. I hope this is on free Spike, I want all of you guys to see Werdum and Machida against good opponents. Then ya’ll will see what I’ve been telling you with your own eyes.

And UFCMania, be nice to me or I’ll stop plugging you and your other 1.5 workers everywhere I go now! :p;):D
Keep up the good work, bro.

Please be on spike only shitty part is commercials, i don’t have HBO personally, so that would suck ass if i missed that card.

Rape.. Jail… Prayer… UFC On Spike….. I can see how three are related.

by BAM on Mar 10, 2007 3:15 AM EST reply actions

i think you’re right ufcmania, makes perfect buisiness sense to have more than one network fighting for you.. I feel that dana’s gonna stick with spike, he’s just pushing for more cash ( at least i hope so). HBO sucks, it’s over-priced and offers moderate home entertainment, on that note if i were them i’d put my last dollar on the ufc..

If it’s on spike is it gonna be live, or not?

by jam on Mar 11, 2007 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

No I dont think it can be shown live, we will likely see it the next day. i think. Also HBO would give Dana several millions to sign up so the ufc would be paid yearly, and it would be a good deal for them. HBO draws money from everyone who pays monthly for there service, and they make money from sponsers like spiketv does.

by Jesse1 on Mar 11, 2007 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone ( UFCmania ) know if UFC 70 will be fought under the Unified Rules, or under british boxing fed rules?

by MoreThanUFC on Mar 11, 2007 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

UFC rules.

by Flaadog on Mar 12, 2007 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

There is no such thing as UFC rules. The UFC fights under the guidelines of the athletic commission of the state they are fighting in. The NSAC took NJ’s Unified Rules for MMA and adopted them. Since then, all states have adopted them, I think ( well the ones that allow MMA ). The British Boxing commission, I doubt, will lay over and play dead.
For example:
BBC rules
11. Striking the head of a downed opponent using the elbow.
15. Kicking the head of a grounded opponent. Outside of Open Guard attacks.
16. Kneeing the head of a grounded opponent. Outside of Open Guard attacks.
17. Stomping a grounded opponent. Outside of Open Guard attacks.

Obviously we all know #11 is allowed under the URoMMA while #15-#17 are not.
Which do we get? UFCmania, little help please?
