UFC 70: Mirko Cro Cop vs. Cheick Kongo?

ufc 70 mirko cro cop cheick kongo
Warning: there's no concrete information here to support the headline.

I received an article from a reader just now that is in Croatian. "James" told me that it says UFC President Dana White is quoted as saying Cro Cop will get a title fight if he can win at UFC 70, which is slated for April 21 in Manchester, England.

It makes sense, considering that most of the fighters on the developing UFC 70 fight card are foreign and/or European.

MMAWeekly.com has Frenchman -- and heavyweight -- Cheick Kongo tentatively scheduled on the card.

So, by process of elimination, I came up with the Cro Cop-Congo match up, which would be pretty decent if it is indeed true.

Like Cro Cop, Kongo has a kickboxing background. It would certainly make for an interesting fight if the two did indeed meet up at the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N.) Arena.

Again, I can't say with any confidence that the translation of the article is correct, much less confirm that this fight is in the works.

So, tread lightly and stay tuned. If there are any Croatian readers out there, feel free to corroborate the article.

Ok, I will translate it for you:

MIRKO FILIPOVIC has amazed visitors of Mandalay Bay tonight in Las Vegas when he has defeated American Eddie Sanchez by TKO near the end of first round.

After the fight he was asked when he will fight for title of world champion of UFC, our fighter has responded that he doesn’t know, and that will be decided by people at UFC.

According from information from some foreign news agencies Dana White, which has given Mirko check of 2,4 million dollars for 2 years contract, has said that Mirko awaits another fight which if he wins will go to fight for UFC heavyweight title.

Mirko will enter ring again most probably in April at the show in London, and fight for title champion is expected someday this year.

There you go :)

on that croatian website( http://index.hr/sport/clanak/redir/338833.aspx ) is London not Manchester…

i think u might want to check the ufc website because the’re already advertising ufc69 shootout for the 7th of april, so i’m pretty sure that ufc 70 is not on april 7th.

UFC 70 is tentatively scheduled for April 21 — thanks for noticing the typo.

Mir? Did someone say Mir??? He’s the Mickelson of MMA. All the talent in the world and nothing between the ears. Mir is finished. Kongo/Mirko will be a slugfest.

Says he’s fighting on the London card too, so it makes 100% sense.

Gasman you must really hate Frank Mir if you want to see that match-up…

by Jesse on Feb 4, 2007 10:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i dont hate mir… i just dont think kongo is that good. id really like to see vera. when he lost hed realize he should be a light heavyweight. i just know the ufc wouldnt sacrifice vera

How many fights does UFC have Cro Cop under contract for… I beleive that it was a 6 fight two year contract. I dont know about anyone else but I want a lidgit fighter going up against the #2 ranked Heavy in the world. I would like to see a AA fight with the winner having a title shot.

arlovski vs cro cop would be insane

by gasman on Feb 5, 2007 1:37 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I also think that Vera would be a match due to his past fights, but what the hell is going on with that guy recently Contract wise? If he cant seal the deal on his contract he could boot him from the UFC literaly Via a match with Cro Cop.

by BAM on Feb 5, 2007 2:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

lol @ gasman. The very reason you dismiss Kongo is the reason I dismiss Mir as a worthy opponent for Cro Cop. Kongo had one bad night/fight in his last 3 UFC bouts, Mir’s last 3 fights have been dismal, even when he “defeated” Dan Christison. Because of their very similar styles and skills, Cro Cop vs. Kongo would be a stand-up war of attrition, and I for one would love to see it.

by Kravmagist on Feb 5, 2007 8:15 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

kravmagist… watch cro cop vs emlianenko (aleks) then tell me if you really think congo can stand up with him.

by gasman on Feb 5, 2007 9:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

CroCop vs Vera would be the best and most challenging … a good way for Dana to boot Vera too. However, i doubt it’s gonna happen because Dana is just gonna let Vera rot on the bench till the end of the year and then dark match him.

If i had a say in the ufc i would put cro cop in a fight way Tim ‘the paperweight champion’ Sylvia. Tim is soooo boring to watch, the only fight that i though were entertaining was when he broke his arm or when he got knocked down. So if he does manage to beat Randy then i would have that match alrady on paper.

by jason bang on Feb 5, 2007 9:33 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Vera is too young and inexperienced to fight Mirko now I think.

by Loken on Feb 5, 2007 10:50 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

First of all guys, until Fedor is in the UFC, the best Heavyweights in the world are missing the top dog of the division. That being said, it doesn’t matter who Cro Cop fights, because there is no heavyweight in the UFC that can deal with him. Vera would be like Eddie Sanchez. He would fold under Cro Cop’s power. Arlovski and Monson would be good enough matches to book but they can’t deal with him either. Tim Silvia is no paper champion. Boring to watch, yes, but winning doesn’t have to be flashy and Tim has been winning. Mind you, if he was 6 feet instead of 6’8" he wouldn’t be as good but he is that tall and it’s always hard to fight that. The question will be, can Cro Cop kick that high and with his same power?

by Getrawbc on Feb 5, 2007 6:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

A couple good points Getrawbc, but you seem to ignore the fact that Cro Cop can also Strike… with those things called fists. He broke the orbital bone of Bob “the beast” Sapp and was striking his way to a win against Nog. till he was caught in an arm-bar. Tim Sylvia is a big, tall, tough guy it will be a great match when it come, but i think what were trying to find out is who should he be fighting at UFC 70. Reading through the heavy weights that UFC has to offer I beleive the best match would be an Andre Arlovski match with the winner getting a title fight it should be a big name with sklls. What the hell do I know im just a fan.

by BAM on Feb 5, 2007 8:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

@Bam I agree with you 100% I am definately not forgetting Cro Cops striking. I am a huge fan of his. I think the UFC wants Kongo because of the stand up nature the fight will be, but I think if you’re gonna say if Cro Cop wins he gets a title shot then he should beat a title contender Like Arlovski or Monson

by Getrawbc on Feb 5, 2007 8:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Alot of guys doubted Cro Cop’s high kicks when he fought Alex Emelianenko. Look what he did there.

by jason bang on Feb 5, 2007 9:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think cro cop would bring silvia down just like chopping a tree down, he would kick the crap out of his legs until he couldn’t stand any more, and when hes so focused on blocking that, off comes his head…

by Goldenboy on Feb 5, 2007 10:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

And here come the “he will kick off his head posts”; I guess we will see what happens sooner rather than later.

id like to see mirko fight for a title right away not fight someone whos not even really known in the ufc let fight tim sylvia or some one like chuck lidell let get it cracken already oh and put some body good against, Anderson sliva like rampage if they can make that possible

by Dj Ez - Q on Feb 9, 2007 11:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i think this match up would be spot on. Kongo is as good as they come on striking (check his vids out) its just that he has no ground game – hopefully if this match happens , his ground game will be full defensive then i think he’s got a good 50/50 chance to beat crocop.

by Insain on Feb 12, 2007 6:25 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree with Dj Ez – Q

I just have to say to many of you people who are leaving messages have way to much faith in Cheick Kongo. He is not in the same class as Mirko, he can strike, but put him up against Mirko and he wont have a chance to strike cause he will be knocked out. I dont even think Kongo would beat Eddie Sanchez. Kongo looks like a good fighter when he is against other average fighters, but up against someone who is world class he just cant compete. I dont wanna waste another $40 dollars ordering ufc to watch Mirko fight another pointless bout. I want to pay to see him fight the best, Arlovski or Sylvia, make it worth my buck.

ps Insain what are you thinking 50/50 chance for kongo, he really is not that good of a striking, look at his opponents, not even comparable to a Arlovski, Monsoon, or Mirko. Learn about the world of MMA and then make comments, you look like an idiot to me making such far fetched comments.

Wow! Maybe you should take some of your own advice Jon. Cheick was a dominany Kick Boxer before moving over to MMA. Although not a remowned striker such as CroCop, Kongo’s striking ability is world-class. Do some research.

im a huge fan of mma as well as mirko and arlovksi. i think a fight between these 2 would make the best sence. cro cop against gonzaga? sure, i guess gonzaga could beat mirko. he always has a punches chance. i agree with jon miller though. if we paying the money to see the fight, then make it worth while. look arlovksi wants a chance at the title again and id like to see that happen. cro cop wants a shot as well. and with his creds, he could have easily walked right in to title contention. i believe if they both want it that bad, then throw them in a cage together and see who wants it more. then the winner would get his chance at the title. sounds good to me, and thats a fight i would love to see happen

I cannot believe cro cop just got sand bagged with a high kick by Gonzaga. Beat at his own game. I cant actually say cro cop was too cocky or unprepared— I am just floored…. watching the replay, cro cop did not even block the kick! He was more like wincing in expectancy that the kick was going to do some damage. U never know what’s what in mma. Coture vs ganzaga? Should be interesting!

by Noggin on Apr 22, 2007 12:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mirko CROCOP Filipovic is going to beat the living hell out of dis guy. Kongo is a stand up Kick Boxer with absolutely no ground skills as we saw against assuero silva. And have you ever seen CROCOP in a K-1 kickboxing fight?? Oh man and Kongo is slower that a turtle when he throws anything!!

If it’s not a left high kick he’s going to destroy his thighs with low leg kicks.
