UFC 69: Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Koscheck?

Diego Sanchez Josh Koscheck UFC
UFC welterweights Diego Sanchez (17-0) and Josh Koscheck (8-1) will settle their feud once and for all at UFC 69 on April 7, according to MMAWeekly.com and WrestlingObserver.com.

In the run up to UFC Fight Night at Miramar in December — as well as in its aftermath — Koscheck was extremely vocal about his desire to rematch Sanchez as soon as possible.

During season one of The Ultimate Fighter, "The Nightmare" sent "Kos" packing after the semifinal match, which Diego won via split decision. Koscheck has waged his own PR battle since the loss, campaigning for another shot against one of the best 170-pound fighters in the UFC.

It looks as if he may have convinced a few people, most importantly, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

Sanchez is believed to be the next inline for a crack at current champion Georges St. Pierre (13-1), who is penciled in to fight Matt Serra (7-4) also at UFC 69 in Houston, Texas. He's coming off of a sensational knockout victory over Joe Riggs (25-9) at UFC Fight Night at Miramar.

Koscheck fought Jeff Joslin (5-3) that same night, outpointing the Canadian on all three judges scorecards. The former NCAA Division I wrestling champion was a perfect 4-0 in 2006 and is looking to keep the streak alive in 2007.

If this fight happens we'll finally get to see what Koscheck is made of against top competition. And, there will be no shortage of trash talking between the two fighters.

This would be a heated battle to say the least.

Sidenote: Sanchez was at UFC Fight Night 8 last night and was mobbed by a throng of fans. He didn't have time to talk, but he was kind enough to sign a UFCmania shirt. His girlfriend is slammin.'

I thought the UFC was saving Diego for GSP later in th year. I knew this was b.s. Who were they really saving in not allowing the Hughes-Sanchez match up?

by Tommy on Jan 26, 2007 10:59 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i am thinking the same thing … lame.

by UFCmania on Jan 26, 2007 12:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No doubt, the UFC wouldn’t risk Hughes not getting his title shot by losing a fight to Sanchez, would be my bet… Also though the UFC is planning a bunch of events, and to side line Sanchez for a title shot doesn’t make sense, its too far away, and there is too much talent in that division… We still need GSP to fight Serra, and Hughes, and to save sanchez till then??? Besides if Huges takes the belt back (unlikely) then he can fight Sanchez…

That division is so talented the UFC could dedicate an entire PPV event to 170 lb ers

by TRavis on Jan 26, 2007 12:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I dont think that Josh should get another shot at Diego yet. Diegos already beaten him and should fight Hughes or GSP or at least someone he hasnt fought yet. Besides I think Josh should fight Parisyn, that would be exciting, with my opinion, Karo winning!

by Goldenboy on Jan 26, 2007 1:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Diego isn’t fighting Hughes or GSP until his TUF contract is finished. That’s his decision, not the UFC’s.

by fightlinker.com on Jan 26, 2007 2:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

although diego has shown that he wants to stall for a contract that reflects his record, he shouldnt have to fight koscheck again. diego probably wouldnt mind, since it would knock down another fight off his contract. either way, cant way to see it. its always fun to watch diego, even if he’s piggy backing on his opponent while raining down bombs.

Diego Sanchez is awesome ! Last time I found out his record it was 18-0. Now it’s 20-0. Go Diego !!!! :D (H) You ROCK !!! Can you tell Chuck that he’s one of my fave fighters too ? Thanx !

P.S. I watched the first season of UFC & I used to be totally against fighting but I love the UFC !!! :) Boooooo to Couture !!!! You suck couture !!! lol…

Yeah…
Kos should fight Karo and Matt should fight Diego.
Should is the right word. That would establish a very good pecking order.

Anyone see Pros vs Joes… Couture did pretty good at first.
Nothing special, then he got tired. they are just normal guys. from 7 to 5 submissions.

i think diegos luck is running out hes a good fighter but koscheck has been improving at a fast pace and i personally dont think that diego is gonna be ready for the wrestling ability of koscheck

by justin on Feb 1, 2007 10:36 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I hope koscheck kicks diego’s arrogant ass. It would make my year, I think koschecks wrestling ability will keep him on top of diego and I think koscheck will get a decision this time. The only think diego has going for him is his aggression and his stanima, personally I think hes very lucky so far and his luck will run out.

I like both guys, but i think Diego deserves a shot at GSP before anybody regardless of outcome.

by scott on Feb 1, 2007 9:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I would like to see a stand up knockout, but they both like to ground and pound.koscheck’s only loss came after dominating the hole fight.should be great fight.

by scott on Feb 1, 2007 10:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Diego’s arrogant ass ???? , what are you talking about nathan ? , Diego is one of the most quiet guys in UFC , he has shown what is made of on the octagon , he beat Kos once and he will do it again, just wait and maybe after the fight you’ll realize that it wasn’t luck , IT’S TALENT !

by Hochs on Feb 2, 2007 3:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you Hochs. I don’t think Diego is arrogant at all. You can’t be a great fighter without thinking you are the best.Koschek is an idiot with the stupidest hair in the world.I think Diego will show that he is the most improved fighter with a second knockout a la Joe Riggs.Kos is a great athlete but he should stick to wrestling.MMA more than anything takes the one thing Koschek lacks which Diego has in spades, heart.

by johnthursday on Feb 2, 2007 4:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to say that it would be a good fight between these guys. Both are excellent athletes with a hunger to win. Unfortunately for both, GSP is the champ and neiher of them are in his league. GSP has the 2nd best takedown defense in the UFC (after Chuck) and so both Diego and Kos would be in trouble. I would like to see GSP beat up on Kos after he made a crack about beating another Canadian after his win over Goulet. Goulet and Joslin aint even in the same world as GSP koschek! What are you even thinking? I guess we’re just those guys on those internets anyway!

by Warren on Feb 2, 2007 6:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ok first off for nathan how can you say diegos an arrogant person he keeps his mouth shut and when he does say somthing he backs it up…diego has the most heart out of anyone in the ufc and when he gets his title shot you’ll see he’s the real deal but to be honest i think koscheck would match up with gsp better just because of his wrestling ability but flat out deigos gonna win.

by justin on Feb 2, 2007 8:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ridiculous. Diego is undefeated since beating down Koscheck the first time. He’s beaten contenders Nick Diaz, Joe Riggs, and Karo Parisyan in satisfying manner, and should fight real contention instead of a mid-level fighter. Since losing to Diego Koscheck has only fought one good fighter in Drew Fickett, and guess what he lost. This is a lame way to promote Diego and I think everyone is tired of waiting for his title shot. For god’s sake how many wins does he need before he fights THE fight?!? If anything give him Hughes or Penn not Josh ‘The Blanket’ Koscheck!

by Nate on Feb 4, 2007 6:04 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Diego will take out Koschek this time by knock-out. Also, he is one of the few that know how to fire knees and Kos is a sitting duck for knees

hahaha am going for sanchez in this one and yes i would love too see sanchez work koscheck ….. again someone needs too shut up koscheck i would love too see GSP do it but its sanchez whos gonna do tha asskickin GO SANCHEZ!!! fuck KOSCHECK!!!

I can’t believe they matched up Matt Huges with who? “lytle”. I think it’s bogus, because you know after he wins this nobody, he’s going to get his title shot against GSP. And Diego will have to wait another year. I hope Diego knocks this fucker out “kos”. Go Diego “The Nightmare” Sanchez. Bring it home for the 505!

by Speedy on Feb 5, 2007 1:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kos will win this fight via stoppage due to ground and pound. Diego will not be able to stop koscheck’s takedowns. Diego is an overrated fighter due to his undefeated record. Diego has fought tougher competion but kos is a lot better than all of you give him credit for. When he fought fickett he dominated the whole fight until the very end where he got submitted. Since then he has greatly improved in every aspect of his game.

by matt on Feb 5, 2007 3:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Greatly improved? Didn’t you see the Jeff Joslin fight? Josh “the blanket” Koschek barely won a decision by holding him down and nearly got knocked out in the process.Koschek would lose badly to:Karo,Riggs,Diaz,Fitch,Hughes,GSP,and especially Diego.matt you are dumb-ass and so is anyone who is a Koschek fan. When will he realize he’s in the wrong sport and go back to wrestling where being a blanket is a good thing.Better yet Koschek should be a pro Knob polisher.

by johnthursday on Feb 5, 2007 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Diego is waiting to fight real compition because he cares so much about his undefeated record, not the paycheck. He beat top contenders?? Karo, Nick Diaz, Joe Riggs, John Allesio. If they were such top contenders how come none of these guys have faught for the belt. Karo had a chance to fight hughes but then backed out, so Riggs stepped in, didnt make weight, non title fight and gets tapped in the first round.. None of these guys are on the same level as Hughes or GSP. Diego has never taken a fight where he was the underdog. Josh Koscheck is not at the same level either. I would rather listen to Toby Keith and Flova Flav sing a duet to “Ebony and Ivory” than to watch these two fight for a top contender spot. My prediction, Josh Koscheck gets booed and then stops getting invited back to UFC for being the most boring fighter in history, and Diego goes undefeated his whole career without ever having a belt.

SANCHEZ HASNT FOUGHT ANYBODY BESIDES KARO, RIGGS IS WASHED UP. MATT HUGHES IS A LEGEND I WISH YALL COULD GET UR FIGHT. HUGHES WOULD DESTROY SANCHEZ , TO BE HONEST SANCHEZ PROLLY WOULD PASS IT UP, HE WANTS A TITLE SHOT. LOSING TO HUGHES WOULD KILL THAT

sanchez is the future in his division i can see him beating both gsp and hughes sanchez is one of those fighters who come around every 5 years or so sanchez will be champ when he gets his shot gsp is overrated hughes is great but its time 4 the nightmare

Kos has some of the best wrestling in the ufc. Not that diego isn’t an awesome fighter. Its just I’m suprised that he keeps winning. I think that koscheck will out wrestle diego and win through g&p. Either way, neither fighter would stand a chance against GSP; hes unbeatable!

I understand fighters want to avenge there losses and such, but Im I the only one getting sick of all this rematch b.s.? I mean I didnt even care about the Liddell/ Couture 3, or the Arlovske /Sylvia 3. Lame! I dont Wanna see Hughes /GSP again, or Kos/ Sanchez. We wait so long(it seems for me at least) in between UFC ppv as it is, do we need to see repeats all the time? Lets keep it fresh! There asre lots of great matchups, stop wasting my eager awaiting on re-matches. WHos with me?

by UFCmaniac on Feb 12, 2007 7:45 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

HANK STFU if St. Pierre was unbeatable then he wouldn’t have a loss now would he.

MMA Dude just because they haven’t fought for a belt doesn’t mean they aren’t contenders. They are still top welterweights. Karo is still ranked #5 in the world by the associated press after all. Koscheck has fought no one of ANY significance. He should have to fight the likes of Karo and Diaz to get to Diego. Diego should fight one of the big two in GSP or Hughes, not someone he knee’d the crap out of on the ultimate fighter. Take a look at Koscheck’s face after the fight, it looks like he jumped face first off of a roof.

Don’t forget that Diego is also an Abu Dhabi practitioner. He held his own against Marcelo Garcia for 12 minutes, who is a grappling world champ. I predict he’ll either feed Koscheck knees all night or submit him. Koscheck’s blanket tactics won’t work against Diego you just watch.

I pray to God Almighty that Diego wins…I kno he will. Diego and Matt are my most favorite fighters in welterweight…but if they were to fight…holy…idk…i’d prolly have to go with Diego, Matt’s had it too long. I ‘bout through up when i heard that rumor goin around that him and matt were gonna fight. That’d be a mean fight. The main reason i like diego and matt is because they both give God the credit and thank him when they fight. Some advice, keep confidence and have faith in God as usual, then for sure you’ll win. Well, my uncle and I are prayin for u…i kno ur gonna win.

LOL! Diego is a clown! He hasn’t fought anyone yet. Karo was robbed out of the decision and Diego beat Joe Riggs who lost the last 3 or 4 of his fights. Diego has no chance at beating Matt Hughes or GSP. Throw Diego’s punk ass in the ring with them 2 and he will definitely get smashed on.

The UFC to me is making a mistake with this fight!
It is a intriguing fight yes! But the UFC runs the risk of
not having a #1 contender like they have in the 205 pound class.

Jardine Vs Forest was not a good idea, Jardine was a bad fight for Forest and going into it it was obvious, a Very good striker who is just as good if not better than Forest on the Ground and with better kicks than Forest. If Forest wins one more fight the UFC was looking at Forest Vs Liddell for another 800-1 Mil in buys now they have no bigtime buz fighter ready. Rampage is not willing until he gets one more fight in and he says this in every interview.

Kos is a tough match for Diego cuz he can out wrestle diego.
Diego is better every were else, but in the end it will be a tough fight and a risky fight. If Diego loses then what after Hughes Vs GSP? Diego would provide a mega event! Weather you like him or not thats the reason he is a huge draw for a title shot! Undefeated and very disliked.

There thinking should have been if this is the route they are taking. Diego Vs Kos would have preferrred (Fitch he is undefeated and climbing the ranks) They should have Signed Fitch Vs Karo.
If Diego wins he is set for the winner of Hughes Vs GSP!
If Diego loses, Kos fights the winner of Fitch Vs Karo to build a bigtime #1 contender.

when did diego get cocky? he’s very composed after his wins, but before that riggs fight he looked ferocious and pissed and intimidating really

by jesse on Feb 23, 2007 11:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I havent commented on this thread yet because I think this one’s a total mismatach. Kos has little to no chance against Diego. I know you TUF Kos fans are gonna pipe up, but really, Diego is in the Hughes-GSP class. Kos is still just a reality TV star. Not saying he wont be great, he just isnt there yet. This “grudge” match is for the PPV $$$.
I think Dana is saving Diego for a title shot, right after the GSP-Serra fight. GSP beats Serra, then you get Diego-GSP, then you get that winner vs Hughes. Anyone not gonna watch those last two fight? It’ll be a good year at welterweight.
BTW, all those “Kos’s wrestling is so great, blah-blah” fans, check out Diego at the ADCC. That’s Marcelo Garcia, kinda like the Fedor of sub wrestling.
http://www.dailymotion.com/visited/search/diego+sanchez/video/x109qz_marcelo-garcia-vs-diego-sanchez-gra
At the end, Diego jumps up and down with a big smile on his face. It aint cause he won, it’s because he went that long against the greatest sub wrestler to ever live. Kos, beware!

I really dont care for either of these fighters diego is a cry baby who wont fight real fighters like Matt Hughes or Josh Burkman Diego hasnt lost a fight in the UFC If he wanted a fight with Matt Hughes he could of got it you dont have that record without getting a little attention and Josh Koscheck should learn how to fight without laying on top of his apponent that is basiclly all he does.

Haha, a whole lot of Nightmare fans out there.

I predict Koscheck will pull off the “upset”.

Koscheck is a bad bad bad match up for sanchez, plain and simple. Kos is just a superior wrestler, and that has been Diego’s advantage in all his fights.

Koscheck has come such a long way since we saw that first match up with Diego in TUF. Back then Kos had bare minimum MMA experience -> his striking and submission skills were in their infancy. Look at him nowadays and he is a completely different beast.

I realize that this is an unpopular prediction, but i’m confident Kos will surprise a lot of people. I am so excited for this rematch,

Koscheck is by far the more arrogant of the two, he more or less calls Karo and Nick Diaz, B level fighters in a November UFC interview. Diego proved himself by beating these two and Josh should have to do the same. He is definately taking the shortcut to his place at the top. I don’t uderstand the dislike some people have for Diego, he may be act a little wacky at times but he is definately not arrogant even though he’d have a right to be so. His fights with Karo and Nick definately two of the best(MMA)fights seen, and he always gives 110%. Matt Hughes apparently wanted to fight him in this next fight, Diego wanted to fight him. I think Diego must be moving up a little too fast for the UFC to handle and they are hoping Josh can stop that, I hope not because he has earned his shot at the title the hard way with blood, sweat and skill.

Since TUF 1 Koscheck has had easy fights against nobodys rly. i mean do u think Koscheck would be able 2 beat Karo or Riggs? nah. I think Diego will finish him this time round his hands r better than the 1st time they fought he is quicker n just 2 gr8 on the ground for Koscheck Sanchez has the best ground & pound at 170 n so what if Koscheck takes him down thats where the fight starts diego can fight of his bk or top so hands down Diego is going 2 walk through Koscheck i think the only person who could beat Diego is GSP

Koscheck is a good fighter, but nowhere near the talent that diego sanchez is. With diego working on his stand up, and proving that it’s affective when he knocked out joe riggs, koscheck has no chance. Although diego sanchez is being very patient with all of his fights, he deserves a fight against any of the title contenders, better yet a title shot because he would knock out any of the title contenders anyway, even hughes! We the fans deserve to see GSP and Diego go at it!!! Everyone knows that would definitely be the best match up of the year!

saying they are arrogant or cocky doesnt make a difference so dont waste your time, whoever takes the win gets it no matter how much they talk.

alright we get it. kos fans think kos will win sanchez fans think sanchez will win and there is no convincing them otherwise. im one of the few who will actually take this into analysis because i do not take sides or pick favorites. the ultamite fighter show was long ago and both fighters have improved a great deal so you cant argue that, its pointless.
heres my rundown of the only stuff that matters, what they have now.

first note: the skill of wrestling is not to be confused with the skill of ground and pound. ground and pound is what sanchez does. he gets you down with wrestling but then uses strikes to win the fight from there. ground and pound can NOT be used as a defense. wrestling however can be used defensivly (look at chuck lidell) or offensively, even for a knockout (matt hughes). it can also be used to take advantage of your opponents weakness (randy couture vs chuck lidell) is wrestling, not gnp. gnp is only offensive and is limited to your wrestling skills (tito ortiz) (diego sanchez).

and lets face it, kos is a wrestler…diego is a gnp.

if the fight is primarily a contest of…

gnp- if kos gets the top for gnp, the round will probably end before he can finish diego, if diego gets the top, there is a good possibility he could stop the fight, but not guarunteed.
if kos gets gnp 30% chance of stoppage, if diego 70% chance of stoppage.

strikes- there strikes are now fairly even, id have to give the clinch to diego but kos has a little bit faster handspeed than diego. 50%/50% split.

wrestling-diego does not typically utilize wrestling, and kos typically does. if it turns to a contest of wrestling, kos has a nice chance of taking the cake. 30% diego 70% kos

submissions- id have to give it to kos mainly because of his wrestling. kos can work into positions that he is more comfortable with in terms of getting his submissions.
60% kos 40% diego

decision- in the battle of attrition, id have to say kos has improved his cardio, but not enough to fully match diegos. it would be close but id have to say my money is on diego. 55% diego 45% kos.

so overall ive added up the percents
and came up with :

KOS-255 total %
DIEGO-245 total %

further note: this is not saying that kos will win, its saying that this fight is slighly in his favor. this fight WILL BE INSANELY CLOSE, it makes me crazy enough to chew bricks because it will be so close.

and seriously please dont insult hughes or gsp by grouping him with diego.. kos and diego are b class fighters but dana white will promote the crap out of them if he has to, just to make it appear as if there is a chance. diego is inferior in every aspect of the game when compared to gsp or hughes. dont make me puke. i think kos could beat one of them, but it would be almost pure luck and it would be because of his explosive handspeed. diego is a slow fat bum and would just get bombed by hughes or hed try to eat a few of gsps spinning back kicks. diego is just to basic and slow pretty much. the only thing kos could do to win is catch one of them with one of his wild ass blinding fast haymakers and it would connect and ko them. but in the end neither of them would really beat either gsp or hughes.

OK.first off kos hands suck.second is diego isn’t slow plus he’s
been training with Oscar dela hoya which is a really great boxer.every thing else i agree with you on though I think the submissions would be 50/50%.I really think wrestling is the only
thing kos has on diego personaly.I say it will be diego winning
with a knock out

thats ok, i never said you werent entitled to your opinion. however, i never said kos had good strikes, i said he throws wild un aimed haymakers that could catch and ko someone. and when im saying diego is slow, im comparing that to gsp hughes and kos and such.

PS: your not taking into consideration that kos is training strikes as well, hes not just drinking beer in preparation for this fight

ok then.I misunderstood.I geuss your right about everyone having
their own opinions to which can’t be changed.I also think alot of peaple are mistaking diego as an A hole but he’s actualy very
patient and not cocky, just look at this interview after he beat joe riggs.http://youtube.com/watch?v=LuhkFd0eyEg

Both guys are bad ass but i just like the Nightmare. KOS is to cocky, just cause he can wrestle. This aint wreslting. Matt Hughes and Diego would be a great freakin fight. I’m gonna say that Diego gets the decision or one of them goes down in the 2nd. Guess well have to wait and see

this isnt a boxing match either, and btw training with a famous boxer doesnt make you a famous boxer… your entitled to your opinions but lets not just attack each other’s.

you people seriously need to get it through your head, it doesnt matter how much they talk about the other fighter the bottom line is:the winner wins, end of story.

It’s pretty clear what the obvious advantages of each fighter are….Diego (GNP) and KOS (wrestling). In a fight with two people as skilled as these guys, it comes down to heart as well. Diego will eat him alive. HE HATES TO LOSE….especially to that fragile rock lookin chump Kos…come Saturday, it’ll all be said and done. Then Diego can go on to bigger and better things. Also, u better believe getting trained by none other than “The Golden Boy”, Oscar de la Hoya, will be a factor. KOS - LIGHT’S OUT. Diego by KO…..
