UFC 68: Babalu is back!

Renato Babalu Sobral ufc
Ok, so I said the other day that the UFC is always the last to update its fight cards.

I take it back.

Renato "Babalu" Sobral (27-6) will fight Jason Lambert (22-6) at UFC 68, according to UFC.com.

We have heard nothing but whispers about Babalu's future since he got whipped at UFC 62 courtesy of Chuck Liddell (20-3). There were rumors flying throughout the forums and message boards that he would fight Jason Lambert.

Nothing was concrete, however, until tonight.

Babalu is one of the most talented light heavyweights in the world -- not just the UFC. Between his two bookend losses to Liddell, the Brazilian rattled off 10 consecutive victories from 2002-2006.

His opponent, Lambert, is a bit questionable. Despite a 3-1 record in the Octagon, he has never fought anyone one the level of Sobral (sans Tim Sylvia).

"The Punisher" is a quality opponent, but after getting beat down by Rashad Evans (9-0) at UFC 63, I find this match up a bit lopsided.

Regardless, the fight is obviously confirmed and it is fantastic to know that Babalu is still lurking in the 205 shadows.

With a fight that "may not be broadcast," however, it makes me wonder whether or not Babalu is in the Zuffa doghouse.

I hope that's not the case.

He’s fun to watch, but he cant beat Liddell which im assuming means he cant beat Rampage. I think a Tito vs. Sobral would be a great fight to watch.

Lambert though? CMON!!! What a slap in the face to Babalu. Just cuz he doesnt match up well against chuck doesnt mean he should have to fight the “middle class” guys.

Babalu is still young, maybe if he puts together another win streak he can challenge for the title again… I don’t know that he is in the UFC doghouse, but what do you do with guys who get the title shot and then fall short? I say use them as gatekeepers the next guy to beat Ortiz or Babalu gets a crack at Lidell, but I bet the UFC will provide an easier route for Rampage Jackson.

Babalu is a descent fighter but needs to prove himself with some real opponents. Not this second rate ufc guy that have been pummeled by Rashad Evans. Lets see Babalu fight Tito, Rampage, Couture, or “the count”
Now that would be a good match up

I heard that around UFC 70 or so Dana was gunna try and get an Ortiz vs Sobral match up tongether. I hope so because that would be an awesome match up. Also I’d like to see a Bisping vs Evans, preferably on the same card.

UFC 70

Chuck Liddell vs Quinton Jackson- LH Championship

Renato Sobral vs Tito Ortiz

Michael Bisping vs Rashad Evans

Babalu is proven..he has beaten Shogun and Jeremy Horn in the same night..He has gone the distance with Fedor, and a very tough Dan Henderson, among other very tough heavyweights. Shogun is an awesome striker and he choked him out in the first. Jason Lambert isnt a worthy fight for Babalu. He will beat him like he did VanArsdale and Chonen, he dominates wrestlers. I think Babalu has the potential to beat everyone in the 205 division, besides Chuck..there styles contradict to much, not to mention for some reason Babalu fights stupid against chuck. To some up Babalu=good, deserves good fights. Cole, i do want to see the Rampage Lidell rematch too, but not so soon. Last i knew, you dont get a shot at the UFC belt when your last two fights were a split decison win over Matt Lindland and a knock out over Marvin Eastman. If that were true, Lutter would have gotten his title shot a long time ago. Let Rampage become a number one contender by beaten other UFC contenders first, everyone in this division is hungry and no one will be a push over.

I am very excited to get Babalu back in the octagon!!! I think that he is the best submission specialist at 205, however, I do think he needs to change camps and work on his stiking. I mean, how much better could he get at submissions? I am always a nervous wreck when he fights untill it goes to the ground, where I know he will end up winning. The best thing he could do is to knock out Jason Lambert, otherwise it won’t be considered an impressive victory. Even though I think that it would be unwise to underestimate any opponent. Afterall, it only takes one punch and anything can happen. I think that he would destroy Ortiz and I would love to see him do it!!! He’s my favorite fighter even though Chuck kicked his ass twice.

RoadHouse, you must be new to mma. Renato has already long proven himself in mma. His accomplishments have been mentioned earlier. I just stop you at mentioning Bisping in the same breathe as Couture, Ortiz, and Rampage. Too funny. Bisping is FAR from ready to fight Evans, let alone Babalu. Bisping vs Sobral conjures up memories of Nick Diaz breaking that guys upper arm. Ouch!
This kid could be great, but he HASN’T fought ANYONE and has looked really bad in some of his wins over in england.
Check out YouTube…or if you cant find anything there, DailyMotion ( based in France ) has TONS of Bisping fights. He often looks so-so against really weak competition.

I’am just tired of seeing all these one sided fights being put together by the ufc. The fights lately have been crap

I would kill to see Sobral take on Tito. Sobral is one of the best fighters at 205, and he deserves to fight a real opponent like Tito. I’m sure after what tito said, Sobral is dying to fight tito, that would be on sick matchup

tito vs babalu indeed i agree. but i think morethanUFC is mistaken and will be disproved if bisping gets to fight rashaad, or forrest griffen. i think hes a contender.
