Rich Franklin waxes UFC 68 return and more

ufc rich franklin
In less than two months, former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin (20-2) will climb back into the Octagon against Jason MacDonald (18-7) at UFC 68 on March 3.

With the event taking place in Columbus, Ohio, it won't be a far drive for the Cincinnati native. And there will certainly be no shortage of support in the stands from the hometown crowd.

According to a recent interview with MaxFighting.com, "Ace" has recovered from the injury (a badly broken nose) he sustained in his loss to Anderson Silva (17-4) at UFC 64 and has resumed normal training for the upcoming bout at the Nationwide Arena.

Franklin is also rather candid and up front about the defeat, his road to reclaiming the title, a possible rematch with Ryoto Machida (8-0), other middleweight contenders such as Chris Leben (16-3) and Mike Swick (10-1), as well as some thoughts on the Tim Sylvia-Randy Couture match up.

It's going to be great to see Franklin back in action at UFC 68. He's going up against a guy that has got to be riding high with big wins over Ed Herman and Chris Leben. For sure, Franklin and MacDonald are at opposite ends of the confidence scale.

I can't wait to see if Franklin can change that on March 3.

Here are the snips I found most interesting during the interview:

On training:

Not bad. I'm healed up and my face is not real sore or anything.

On watching the loss to Silva:

No, I haven't [watched it yet]. I probably won't watch that tape while I am getting ready for Jason. It won't do me any good to study my Silva fight when I'm preparing for MacDonald.

On fighting MacDonald at UFC 68:

I'll prepare for the fight like it would be because that is his strongest point [jiu-jitsu] and hope that it is not if it does go to the ground. I think that [striking] is my strength in this fight.

On Mike Swick:

... Swick is good on his feet so I have another striker I am contending with. Not to take anything from Swick being a well rounded fighter. We all know that he is good on the ground as well.

On a potential rematch with Machida:

I could care less, really. If I fight Machida in the future, great. If I don't, I don't care one way or the other. I am almost positive it would be [a different fight next time].

On his UFC contract:

Still finishing up the previous one. Three [fights] left.

On the Sylvia-Couture fight:

... you can't just count Randy out.... He's definitely got some things to offer Sylvia. This is going to be a tough fight for Randy. Tim's takedown defense has gotten a lot better and he's long and range-y. Randy is the master of his domain. He knows how to suck you in to his game plan, dirty box, take you down and smash you so it's an interesting fight.

On getting back the 185-pound belt:

... I actually started thinking about that the other day and I was actually beginning to wonder if I could actually pull that off by the end of the year or not. It's hard to tell if the UFC is going to approach me with a couple of contender fights before the belt or if they are going to have me fight this one or put me back in a rematch. I think all of that stuff, they base off of match-ups and how business is going with Silva and all that kind of stuff so who knows.

I cant wait for franklin to get back in there also. I think his confidence may be shaken but he is the former champ so he knows that he is the man. Every good fighter loses in MMA, Franklin will be back and Mac will just be the first victim on his road back to Silva!!!

While I feel bad for MacDonald being the first to face a possibly re-energized Franklin with something to prove, there’s also the idea that there will not be a better time for MacDonald to face Franklin than now while his confidence is low. Just look at what Franklin himself did to the Crow and how the Crow was afterwards. The mental game is huge in MMA, and something just didn’t add up in the Silva match. If there’s something going on in Franklin’s life that’s messin his head up, I think it gives MacDonald a HUGE advantage.

franklin is nothing short of a class act…its gonna be interesting to see if mcdonald can execute his gameplan against him, which will surely be to go straight to the ground…i see franklin winning by a knockout…i hope he gets another shot at tha spida sometime this year, a rematch will no doubt be a much better fight, i thought franklin was doing a decent job in the beginning of their first fight, for some reason he couldn’t handle the clinch, i don’t know why…you could see silva is a fighter who jumps on any opportunity he can find in a fight and as soon as he realized rich wasn’t ready for his deceptive strength, he took advantage…franklin will fight a much smarter fight in the rematch…also there are a lot of people who say tha spida can’t fight on the ground and travis lutter might have a shot at submitting the champ, but i am here to tell you silva is an animal on the ground as well, he can knock out anyone anytime in any position, he truely is what mma is all about

I am a big Jason Macdonald fan, having seen him fight in Canada before he made the UFC… The fact is even the UFC Champ is sill just a person. If Macdonald is on, he could win, but Franklin is so talented and stong, and a great fighter. Usually Franklin goes into a 185 match the bigger stronger guy, but Jason used to fight at 205 as well. Even though I am a big fan, and I want Jason to win, I think it will be Franklin R3 TKO by strikes. A couple of notes about Jason: 1 – His striking is better than it looked against Leban, but it is not at Rich’s level, especially with punching power. He primarily uses well placed strikes to set up a take down.
2- He has a great chin, I am telling you, I have seen him get hit in the face, in person, super hard and not go down.
Rich still might ko him, considering how good and powerful of a striker Rich is, but if Rich hits him and assumes the end is near he could be wrong.

Oh, I forgot to mention that since the UFC re-negotiated Jason’s contract for 4 more fights, a signing bonus for extending, and a increase in pay, the UFC must plan to keep him around in the 185 division even if he does become Rich’s first victom on he way to reclaim the belt.

I figured there was a good chance the UFC would use a sweet contract extension as payment for stepping up to fight Franklin. Good for him! I’m glad we’ll be seeing more of him, win or lose.

it’s cause these pride fighters are badass,I’m a ufc fan but watch out for the pride fighters they’re really good. Alot of UFC fighters are gonna lose to these guys. Watch Quinton Jackson for sure will win his match and so will Cro cop. these guys are the new future champs of the UFC

Yeah, franklin said , he want to regain the belt by the end of the year , man , he has a lot of confidence in himself , but now the division is more dangerous than before when he was the campion, it has Anderson Silva ,a other newconmers fighters , he lost in less than a minute against silva , i dont think he can go there and win over him easily , without gettin badly beatten , when franklin won the title the last time he fought against normal fighters not against the top ten in the division , now , to prove himself the UFC will be fored to put him against the real though opponents in the division ,they can protect him anymore ,the last easy fight he would have will be this against McDonald , a really warm up for franklin.

I really think Franklin cant get an easier fight than Jason MacDonald, but there is no way he should want another fight with Silva that guy is awesome and is going to be the chap for a longtime I dont think there is any middlewieght that can take him out. Whaty I really would like to see is Mike Swick getting into the cage with Silva. So silva could re-arrange his face like he did Franklins. I also have to agree with Isaiah those pride fighter better no be taken likely by the UFC guys.

Rich Franklin is a pretender to the championship. Any ‘so-called’ champion that can be completey broken by somebody making their debut does not deserve the belt. Pride is far far far far far x 1000 superior to the UFC in all divisions except one – welterweight. GSP is the no.1 fighter in the world bar none in that weight class and I challenge Pride to send anyone across that would even take him to a decision. I do not think that Liddell will beat Rampage – my opinion. Also Cro Cop could KO silvia while talking to his pals in Zagreb on his cell phone. I mean he couldn’t even finish Monson. I reckon Lyoto will definitely be a match for Silva, he’s already beaten Franklin easily and will banjo Swick in a heartbeat. UFC – Ultimate fucking crap.

by McNamara on Jan 29, 2007 8:41 AM EST reply actions

but Lyoto is a light heaviweight , he fought against franklin when rich was in the 205 lbs division. He is not going to come to the ufc middleweight division , isnt he ?.
And yeah , silva is and scary guy .I mean , with all the refined stand up rich franklin has ,silva came close calmly ,absorb some punches like nothing , and took all the time he needed to grab richs neck and get him into that clinch, i honesty ,i dont see how rich would defeat silva next time , more is he continue to train the same way as he did before . As i know , he didnt change his gym routine before his loss.

McNamara…so called champ? Rich Franklin is a true champion and a top notch fighter….as far as champions go and getting beat in the first minute (which didnt happen, it was first round)..wasnt it the pride champ wanderlei silva who got KOed by vitor belfort in how long It happens to the best of them…Rich will be back.
