MacDonald confirms Franklin fight at UFC 68
I just want to briefly follow up on some UFC 68 news from a few days ago, which pointed to a 185-pound showdown between former UFC middleweight king Rich Franklin (20-2) and the nifty Jason MacDonald (18-7).
According to a recent article on Canada.com, MacDonald will indeed collide with "Ace" on March 3 in Columbus, Ohio.
Here's a snip from the "The Athlete" in the article:
"When you continue to be successful in the UFC, each time you go back you get a tougher fight. I got a big win over (Chris) Leben who was considered to be in the top five and now they're giving me someone else who is another top guy."
While not from the UFC, this statement is about as official as it gets. Sherdog.com also confirms this news, and adds that the UFC and MacDonald have agreed on a four-fight contract extension for the Canadian.
One quick note: The MMA rumor mill is constantly churning, spitting out possible fights and rumored match ups. We comb through most of it, but in the end, we do our best to stick with the best — MMAWeekly.com and Sherdog.com — when it comes to announcing them here at UFCmania.
These established and trusted sources are on the money more often than not.
I'm just trying to stress caution and make the point that things happen — injuries, suspensions, deer hunting, contract disputes, etc. — that can often derail even the "guaranteed" locks.
To avoid any and all confusion, your best bet is to check back here as often as possible for the latest UFC updates. ;)

Jason MacDonald appears to be the real deal. If he can get through Franklins striking – and get his hands on him – he has a good chance for another submission.

This isn’t looking like its gonna be much of a night. I see a night of hand out revival of the famous mans fighters. All in the same camp all looking bad lately and all fighting other people then who us fans (who the ufc swears its all about!!) want to see them fight. Act right Dana and Joe.

I’m a huge fan of Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes! I, for one, am so excited to have this PPV event in Ohio (I’m a Buckeye). I’ll be there no matter who they’re fighting!!!!!

Jaon mcdonald the real deal ? are you kidding me? yes he won over leben but with a lucky strike , he was being dominated by leben , even he was slammed to the ground a couple of times by leben ,and he also eate good punches trhown by leben ,leben was winning that fight until mcdonald got that chocke , what was pure luck , cos in reality was a lebens mistake ,but leben owned mcdonald ,that being said , mc donald is a can for franklin , they keep throwing cans to franklin ,see again the mcdonald leben fight , mcdonald clinched all the time , he clinched so often that the refere had to stop the fight several times coz mcdonald didnt want to trade with leben and he prefers to clinch like a lil bitch.

If you think that because McDonald won on a mistake (and it doesn’t mean anything), then you really don’t understand MMA. Sure, there are potentially better fighters in the MW division, but the UFC is a business and why would they throw all their best fighters in one event? Only to leave us with ‘leftovers’ in the next PPV? I don’t think so. I would really like to see Rich vs. Swick, just as much as a Hughes vs. Sanchez, but I understand the rationale for this match-up. Go Jason!!!

Mcdonald doesn’t have a chance, this will be another Nate Quarry incident – too soon. Swick deseverves the shot against Franklin. Then Silva can knock ’em both out!

Just to reply to “YO’s” comments, Jason MacDonald did not win by luck, he won because he was able to take all that Chris Leben could dish, and waited for Leben to make a mistake, and Jason capitalized on that mistake. Jason MacDonald is a ground guy, and what he did to Leben is his game plan… Period!
I’m not saying that he is ultimately ready to fight Rich, but it will be a huge test for him, and if he’s able to prove himself, he will be in line for title contention.
You probably won’t see Rich Vs. Swick, because after the Silva/Lutter fight, I believe Swick will face the winner of that match, but Hughes Vs. Sanchez is not too far-fetched. That sounds like a great matchup.

Reply to Yo, and John B… John B has it right on the money! That being said what UFC fans haven’t seen a lot of is that J.Macdonald has a granit chin. J. Macdonald went through a rough period with some losses to guys he hould have beat, but in those losses he took some massive beatings without getting ko’d… Rich Franklin has never been submitted, and it is unlikely that he will let this fight get to the ground. That being said if J. can dig deep and get the fight to the mat he could be the first to submitt Rich. Any Jason Macdonald Haters out there should go to Sherdog.com and look at his record, and then argue that a submission win was luck? Yo, your crazy if you think submission win is luck!

It wasn’t luck but still not a great performance by him and still a hand out to Rich.

Anderson Silva beat Leben and then got his shot at Franklin and one. Mcdonald beat Leben and got a shot at Franklin. See a pattern here. If he beats Franklin watch him get that shot at Silva.
Franklins game appears to be a standup one much like Leben. Leben was supposed to have really good hands and McDonald took everything Leben had to offer in that departement. Taken out of his game, Leben was beaten/choked out. If McDonald can take Franklins strikes like he did Leben’s, I see McDonald winning this fight. Both fighters are in amazing shape, that won’t be a factor, what will be is if Franklin can finish this fight standing because if he can’t, I don’t see him winning on the ground.

Your mistake is compare leben with franklin , both are totally different opponents , if you watch the leben mcdonald fight , you are going to see that leben commited no one but multiple mistakes , for example , he allways went for the nockout punch , despite he had some moments when he cleary could have used knees or leg kicks when mc donald was getting up from the ground totally exposing his head ,if leben would been a little more clever in use the bigger reach of a kick instead of base his offense in punches he could been hurted mcdonald more ,but leben basically use his fist in the stand up game ,while franklin not only has a very refined stand up he also knows how to kick properly in time , leben goes forward with a barrage of punches hoping he can knock you out , while franklin use his footwork and jabs in a strategy to put you to sleep.

comparing one fighter to another is disrepectful because each fighter is different and has their own pros and cons, weaknesses and strengths. you have to well rounded to fight in the super bowl of martial arts: the UFC. as for the comment about leben and macdonald. macdonald may have capitalized on a mistake but there’s no “mistake” in the win loss column.
