Diego Sanchez: 'I want Matt Hughes'
Diego Sanchez is one step closer to a welterweight title shot in 2007, scoring his first career knockout over Joe Riggs early in the first round during UFC Fight Night at Miramar.
During the post-fight interview, however, "Nightmare" revealed that he'd like to fine tune his mixed martial arts game before a showdown with current champ Georges St. Pierre.
That's fine, considering GSP is already booked until mid 2007.
When asked who he'd like to fight next, he mentions nemesis Josh Koscheck – who can be seen hawking Sanchez in the background for a majority of the interview – and BJ Penn.
He actually comments that Koscheck "didn't look good tonite," which should add some nice fuel to the fire.
But the real prize, according to Sanchez, would be Matt Hughes.
Here's the full clip (During the interview, he often mentions Francisco "Panchito" Bojado – an Olympian who represented Mexico in the 2000 games – who he trains with to improve his standup):
Based on this interview, it appears that the 25-year-old is well aware of his capabilities, as well as in which areas he needs to improve before making a serious run at the title.
But, will that include a fight with the former nine-time UFC welterweight champion, who has a monster rubbermatch scheduled with GSP at UFC 69 on April 7 in Montreal, Canada?
The potential for a Hughes loss might significantly dent the marketability of that marquis event.
Sanchez-Koscheck seems like the more realistic choice, especially given the recent war of words.
Having said all of that, we'll pony up the $39.95 to see either fight ... any fight, really.

a Hughes-Sanchez #1 contender fight would have been way better the rematch.
