UFC 65: St. Pierre tops Hughes; Sylvia survives Monson

It didn't really happen they way most UFC fans thought it would, but boy did it happen.

UFC 65: "Bad Intentions" was supposed to be a competitive war between the two best 170-pound mixed martial artists in the world.

But, Georges St. Pierre had other plans, utterly dominating the dominant Matt Hughes for two rounds before ending it with a spectacular high kick to the neck and ground and pound.

He is now the new owner of the UFC welterweight championship belt.

"Rush" looked spectacular, puzzling the Miletich fighter with a mix of jabs, kicks, sweeps and sound takedown defense. It was just too much for the now former UFC Welterweight Champion.

Indeed, Matt Hughes was clearly overwhelmed. He appeared disinterested and uncomfortable from the minute he stepped inside the Octagon.

Most of that had to do with the effectiveness of St. Pierre. However, it could possibly signal that his storied MMA career is coming to an end.

So, will we see St. Pierre-Hughes 3?

Obviously, it makes sense. Zuffa, Dana White and the fans are probably already clamoring for it. However, is Matt Hughes?

Who cares, really. The country boy will survive.

This should be more about St. Pierre and what he is going to mean to the 170-pound class. He is already a likeable, talented and exciting fighter. He's downright awesome.

And no matter who he fights, the action is going to be nonstop.

We already can't wait for his first title defense, which sounds like it will happen in his hometown, Montreal, Canada.

Here are the rest of the results.

--Georges St. Pierre defeated Matt Hughes via knockout in round two
--Tim Sylvia defeated Jeff Monson via unanimous decision
--Brandon Vera defeated Frank Mir via technical knockout in round one
--Drew McFedries defeated Alessio Sakara via technical knockout in round one
--Joe Stevenson defeated Dokonjonosuke Mishima via guillotine choke in round
--Nick Diaz defeated Gleison Tibau via technical knockout in round two
--Antoni Hardonk defeated Sherman Pendergarst via knockout in round one
--James Irvin defeated Hector Ramirez via technical knockout in round two
--Jake O'Brien defeated Josh Schockman via unanimous decision

matt hughes displayed his sensitive side, with ample hugs and prayers before the bout. He continued to smile as GSP worked hom over. Dont smile, train harder and work on your stand-up and defense..GSP displayed the fire and dominated matt hughes

Dominating performace by GSP, i feel that many ppl counted him out in this fight, and his win over matt hughes probably sent shockwaves through the MMA world. face if…GSP will have this title for a longggggg time, their 3rd fight will have the same result, and GSP will sent matt hughes into retirement, like chuck did to randy
